The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the national squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, alongside the team for the Asian Games in Japan. Confirming recent speculation, Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as India’s new Twenty20 International (T20I) captain, returning to the shortest format for the first time since 2023.
In a significant selection shift, the 35-year-old Suryakumar Yadav—who captained India to a T20 World Cup title in February–March—has been stripped of the captaincy and omitted from the squad entirely.
The most notable inclusion in the announced squad is the 15-year-old prodigy, Vaibhav Suryavanshi. His maiden call-up to the senior national side follows a prolific Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign, where he accumulated 776 runs whilst maintaining a strike rate exceeding 200.
Should Suryavanshi make his debut during the upcoming tours, he will establish a new milestone as the first Indian cricketer to play an international fixture before the age of 16. For context, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar made his Test debut at 16 years and 205 days, and his One Day International (ODI) debut at 16 years and 238 days.
The decision to replace Yadav with Iyer reflects an emphasis on recent form and future planning. By the time of the 2028 T20 World Cup, Yadav will be 38 years old. Furthermore, his recent statistical output has declined; during the 2026 T20 World Cup, he registered 242 runs across nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72. This drop in form was mirrored in the 2026 IPL, where he managed 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76.
Conversely, Iyer has demonstrated strong domestic form and a commendable managerial record in franchise cricket. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title in 2024, and guided Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the finals in 2020 and 2025 respectively.
The domestic performance metrics of the two players are detailed below:
| Player | Tournament / Season | Innings / Matches | Total Runs | Strike Rate | Average |
| Shreyas Iyer | IPL 2025 | — | 604 | 175.07 | — |
| IPL 2026 | — | 498 | 168.81 | — | |
| Suryakumar Yadav | IPL 2026 | 13 | 270 | 147.54 | 20.76 |
The newly announced squad also features inclusions for Nitish Kumar, Ravi Bishnoi, and Prince Yadav. However, several members of the recent T20 World Cup-winning team have missed out, including Rinku Singh and Kuldeep Yadav. Furthermore, senior players Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested from the bilateral tours, though Bumrah has been included in the squad designated for the Asian Games.
These fixtures will mark India’s first T20I appearances since retaining their T20 World Cup title under Yadav in March. The team is scheduled to play two T20Is against Ireland in Belfast on 26 and 28 June,
