Jamaat Leader Expelled Over Alleged Affair

A local leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has been expelled from the party after allegations emerged that he had engaged in an illicit relationship with the wife of a disabled party worker in Habiganj district.

The disciplinary action was taken against Nurul Islam Sajal, who served as the Ameer of Gazipur Union Jamaat under Chunarughat Upazila. The decision was made during an emergency organisational meeting of the Chunarughat Upazila Jamaat held on Thursday (6 August), according to party officials. Sajal is a resident of Jarulia village in Gazipur Union of Chunarughat.

Local sources said the incident came to light in the early hours of Tuesday, at around 2:00 am, when villagers reportedly caught Nurul Islam Sajal in an allegedly compromising situation with the wife of a disabled Jamaat worker in the Gajaria Para area. The allegations quickly spread throughout the locality, drawing the attention of both community members and party leaders.

Following the incident, an initial attempt was made to resolve the matter at the local level. According to local accounts, Gazipur Union Jamaat Secretary Mizanur Rahman intervened and sought to mediate after assurances were given that the allegations would be addressed through an appropriate process. Sajal was subsequently released into the custody of his elder brother, Kajal Mia.

The matter was later referred to the Upazila leadership, where senior party officials reviewed the allegations. After examining the complaint and determining that the allegations were substantiated, the party decided to remove Nurul Islam Sajal from all organisational responsibilities, including his position as Union Ameer. Party leaders said the decision was taken to uphold organisational discipline and protect the party’s reputation.

Speaking on the matter, Chunarughat Upazila Jamaat Ameer Md Idris Ali said the expulsion followed confirmation of the allegations against Sajal.

“The local leadership decided to expel Nurul Islam Sajal after verifying the allegations of immoral conduct brought against him,” he said. “To ensure that organisational activities in Gazipur Union continue without disruption, Maulana Md Abdul Matin has been appointed as the acting Union Ameer.”

The appointment of an acting leader is intended to maintain the party’s routine organisational activities while the local unit continues its work under interim leadership.

Journalists attempted to obtain Nurul Islam Sajal’s response to the allegations. When contacted by telephone and informed that the caller was a member of the press, he reportedly disconnected the call. Subsequent attempts to reach him were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone was found to be switched off. As a result, his version of events was not available at the time the report was prepared.

The expulsion represents an internal disciplinary measure taken by the party following its own organisational review of the allegations. No information was provided indicating that any criminal proceedings had been initiated in connection with the incident, and the party’s decision was based on its internal assessment of the complaint and its code of organisational conduct.
