A 21-year-old woman has reportedly been subjected to a horrific gang-rape at a restaurant in the Jashore Sadar upazila, orchestrated after she was allegedly drugged with a spiked beverage by a local political figure. The ordeal has since sparked intense local outrage, compounded by grave allegations of intimidation, forced hospital discharge, and a sluggish police response designed to shield the primary suspect from legal accountability.
According to the formal complaint lodged by the victim’s family, the young woman hails from Tuniyaghra village within the Monirampur upazila. She had developed a romantic relationship with Dalim Hossain, a 35-year-old who serves as the general secretary of the Ramnagar Union Juba Dal—the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
On the evening of 25 August, Hossain allegedly invited the victim to a restaurant situated in the Kuayada Bazar area. Shortly after consuming a soft drink offered during the meeting, the victim lost consciousness. When she regained awareness at approximately 11:00 PM, she discovered herself in a distressed and undressed state, realizing she had been violated. As she confronted the reality of the assault, the perpetrators allegedly threatened to disseminate intimate photographs and compromising media across social media platforms should she report the crime. Alongside Hossain, four other individuals—Joy, 24, Mehedi, 30, Rabiul, 35, and Golam, 27—have been named as co-accused in the incident.
The fallout from the assault extended beyond the initial crime scene into a web of institutional concealment. Due to her deteriorating physical and psychological condition, the victim was admitted to Jashore Sadar Hospital on 28 August. However, fearing media scrutiny and public exposure, individuals allegedly connected to the perpetrators forced an irregular discharge at dawn on 29 August. Without securing an official medical release, the vulnerable victim was reportedly bundled into a vehicle and spirited away to a private residence in Khulna to continue her treatment away from prying eyes.
Human rights observers and local residents have expressed profound concern over the handling of the case by local law enforcement. Allegations suggest that because the primary accused wields significant local political influence, the Kotwali Model Police Station has dragged its feet, failing to execute swift arrests or provide adequate protection to the grieving family. The atmosphere of fear has grown so acute that the victim’s mobile phone remains switched off, and her relatives have retreated into isolation, reluctant to speak openly with journalists or investigators.
Repeated attempts by reporters to secure official comments from the victim’s father, Hafizur Rahman, and the officer-in-charge of the Kotwali Model Police Station proved unsuccessful, as their telephone lines went unanswered.
Civil society groups and local community members have mounted pressure on the authorities, demanding the immediate apprehension of all named suspects and rigorous security guarantees for the survivor and her relatives. The incident highlights the persistent vulnerabilities faced by women in rural administrative zones, where political patronage can sometimes eclipse the rule of law.
