Bangladeshi-born American midfielder Kavan Sullivan has added another landmark achievement to the early stages of his professional career, becoming the youngest player in Major League Soccer (MLS) history to win the Player of the Month award.
Sullivan, aged 17 years and two days, recently made his senior debut for the United States national team. He has now followed that milestone by earning the monthly award after a superb September for Philadelphia Union, where his attacking contribution stood out throughout the month.
The teenager scored four goals and registered five assists for Philadelphia Union in September, contributing directly to nine goals. That was the highest total goal contribution recorded by a player in MLS during the month and provided the foundation for his record-breaking award.
Sullivan has also surpassed a record that had stood since 2020. In August of that year, Orlando City striker Daryl Dike became the youngest MLS Player of the Month at the age of 20 years and 98 days. Sullivan has now taken the record at an age almost three years younger than Dike was when he received the honour.
The latest achievement adds to a career that has developed at remarkable speed. Sullivan first made MLS history two years ago when he became the youngest player to appear in the competition. His progress since then has continued to attract attention, with his performances for Philadelphia Union increasingly reflecting his growing influence in the senior game.
His September figures were particularly impressive because they combined goalscoring with chance creation. Four goals showed his ability to contribute directly on the scoresheet, while five assists demonstrated his effectiveness in setting up teammates. Nine direct goal contributions made him one of the most productive attacking players in the league during the month.
Sullivan also has a notable connection with Bangladesh through his family. His older twin brothers, Ronan Sullivan and Declan Sullivan, have represented Bangladesh at under-20 level and were part of the team that won the SAFF Championship. Kavan, the youngest of the four brothers, has instead pursued his international career with the United States.
That path reached another significant stage with his recent senior international debut. At just 17, Sullivan has now combined an early appearance for the US national team with a record-setting achievement at club level.
For Philadelphia Union, his September form provided a major attacking contribution. The combination of goals and assists made him a decisive presence in the side and helped underline why he was selected for the monthly honour.
Sullivan’s latest record is particularly notable given how early he is in his senior career. He has already gone from becoming MLS’s youngest player to becoming its youngest Player of the Month, while also receiving his first taste of senior international football with the United States.
With his family ties to Bangladesh and his growing profile in American football, Sullivan’s progress is being followed with interest on both sides of his footballing background. His latest MLS record marks another significant step in what remains a very young career.
