Kieron Pollard has been named the new head coach of Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The decision comes after the franchise parted ways with Mahela Jayawardene last week. Pollard, who retired from playing in the IPL prior to the 2023 edition, spent the past four seasons serving as the franchise’s batting coach before being elevated to the top job.
The former West Indies all-rounder shares an enduring legacy with Mumbai Indians and its global sister franchises, having first signed as a player ahead of the 2010 season. During an illustrious playing career with the team, he was an integral force behind their five IPL title victories in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. He also helped the side secure two Champions League T20 (CLT20) trophies in 2011 and 2013. Across 189 IPL appearances, Pollard amassed 3,412 runs at a striking rate of 147.32 while taking 69 wickets. He made his final appearance as a player in the 2022 season before transitioning seamlessly into coaching.
Addressing his appointment, Pollard expressed deep pride in taking over the reins. He noted that Mumbai Indians has formed an integral part of his life and career, emphasizing that his strong bond with the squad, management, and supporters made the opportunity particularly meaningful. Having experienced the franchise’s culture both on the pitch and in the dugout, he highlighted his clear understanding of the immense responsibility tied to wearing the iconic blue and gold jersey. He added that he looks forward to working closely with the players and backroom staff, nurturing young talent, and building upon the club’s winning legacy.
Nita Ambani, owner of Mumbai Indians, welcomed the move, recalling that Pollard first joined the franchise as a promising 22-year-old before becoming a cornerstone of the organisation over sixteen years. She praised his track record of creating unforgettable moments on the field and highlighted how his transition into coaching has allowed him to pass down his tactical sharp-mindedness and passion. Expressing full confidence in his leadership, she stated that Pollard embodies the spirit of Mumbai Indians and will bring the same dedication and resilience to his expanded role as head coach.
