Land Dispute Turns Fatal as Brother Dies After Blow

A 52-year-old man has died after allegedly being struck with a stick by his elder brother during a dispute over land in Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat. Police have detained two people in connection with the incident, including the victim’s elder brother, Nur Islam, and Shamim Bin Iftekhar Babu.

The incident took place on Sunday evening in the South Baraipara area of Tongbhanga Union in Hatibandha upazila.

According to local sources, Nur Mohammad, also known as Dhakaiya, had been involved in a longstanding dispute with his elder brother Nur Islam over land. Tensions reportedly resurfaced on Sunday afternoon when the two brothers became involved in another argument over the disputed property.

The confrontation later escalated in the evening. At one point, Nur Mohammad allegedly became involved in a physical altercation with Nur Islam and several others accompanying him. During the confrontation, Nur Islam allegedly struck his younger brother in the chest with a stick, causing him to collapse on the ground.

Local residents subsequently rescued Nur Mohammad and took him to Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition. After assessing his condition, the attending doctor referred him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

However, Nur Mohammad died on the way to Rangpur, according to his family.

His wife, Parvin Begum, alleged that when the injured man was being taken to hospital, people accompanying Nur Islam attacked them again. With assistance from local residents, Nur Mohammad was eventually taken to the Hatibandha health complex before being referred to Rangpur. He died while being transported there.

The incident has prompted a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the subsequent death.

Hatibandha police station Officer-in-Charge Ashrafuzzaman Sarker confirmed the incident. He said the body had been sent to the district headquarters for a post-mortem examination.

According to the officer, Parvin Begum filed a complaint with the police, following which a case was registered. Nur Islam and Shamim Bin Iftekhar Babu have been detained in connection with the case, while efforts are under way to arrest the other accused.

The police are also examining the circumstances of the alleged assault, including the sequence of events that led to Nur Mohammad’s death.
