Land Feud Turns Deadly

A long-running dispute over a small plot of land in northern Bangladesh ended in tragedy on Monday morning when two cousins were killed in a violent clash in Bogura’s newly formed Mokamtola upazila.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 am in Lakshmikola village, where tensions had reportedly been simmering for months over the ownership of just three decimals of land. According to police and local residents, the disagreement had repeatedly fuelled arguments between the two related families, with recent days seeing an escalation in hostility.

The deceased were identified as Yasin Ali, 33, son of Jamil Uddin, and Sumon Molla, 35, son of Mofazzal Hossain Molla. Both were residents of the wider Mokamtola area in Bogura district.

Witnesses said an argument broke out between the rival groups on Monday morning, quickly escalating into a physical confrontation. During the clash, several individuals allegedly attacked Yasin and Sumon with sharp weapons, inflicting severe injuries.

Yasin died at the scene from his wounds. Sumon, who was critically injured, was rushed to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for emergency treatment. However, attending doctors later declared him dead upon arrival.

The double killing sparked widespread panic and anger among villagers, with fears of retaliatory violence spreading through Lakshmikola. Police from Shibganj Police Station were deployed shortly after the incident to restore order and prevent further unrest.

Officer-in-Charge Shahinuzzaman Shahin confirmed that one suspect, identified only as Rahat, has been detained in connection with the killings. Investigators believe the attack was directly linked to the ongoing land ownership dispute.

Police later recovered both bodies and sent them to the morgue of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Authorities said additional officers have been stationed in the area as a precautionary measure while investigations continue. Law enforcement officials are also attempting to identify and arrest other suspects believed to have participated in the assault.

Land-related violence remains a recurring issue in many rural parts of Bangladesh, where unclear documentation, inheritance disputes, and overlapping ownership claims often trigger prolonged legal and personal conflicts. Such disputes frequently escalate when mediation efforts fail or local grievances remain unresolved.
