Looted Police Firearm Recovered in Cumilla as Suspect Arrested

Detectives in Cumilla have recovered an operable police shotgun alongside a locally made firearm and ammunition during an early morning raid, arresting a 32-year-old man in connection with the seizure. The operation, led by the Detective Branch (DB) of police, also resulted in the confiscation of a motorbike used to transport the weapons.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Sub-Inspectors Pabitra Sarkar and Arnab Barua carried out the raid in the Natherpetua Station Bazaar area under Manohargonj Upazila. Officers intercepted a Discover motorcycle driven by the suspect, identified as Md Eyakub Khan, also known as Babar, a resident of Joynagar village in Senbagh Upazila, Noakhali.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a sack tied to the left side of the motorbike. Inside, officers retrieved an operational shotgun, a locally manufactured gun, and two live cartridges.
According to Sub-Inspector Pabitra Sarkar, the suspect was immediately taken into custody while the motorcycle and firearms were seized as evidence. The Detective Branch suspects that the recovered shotgun forms part of the arsenal looted from police stations during the widespread civil unrest and political volatility on 5 August.
Officer-in-Charge of Cumilla DB, Mohammad Shamsul Alam Shah, confirmed that law enforcement agencies are verifying the origin of the firearms to determine which police facility the shotgun was taken from. Authorities across Bangladesh have been conducting targeted drives to recover arms and ammunition stolen from various law enforcement posts during the chaos surrounding the political transition.
Following preliminary interrogation and completion of formal legal proceedings, Eyakub was presented before a local court on Sunday afternoon, where the magistrate ordered him remanded to prison. Investigators are examining whether the suspect is linked to an organized arms-smuggling syndicate or criminal gangs operating in the region. Further drives are expected as law enforcement continues its nationwide effort to account for missing police weaponry and mitigate public safety risks.
