A powerful earthquake measuring 6.5 in magnitude struck the Nicobar Islands region of India in the early hours of Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Tsunami Warning System. Fortunately, the tremor did not trigger a tsunami alert.

The epicentre was located 259 kilometres west-northwest of Sabang, a city in Aceh province, western Indonesia. This region is historically significant as it was the hardest hit area in the catastrophic 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which was triggered by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake and resulted in the deaths of more than 220,000 people across 15 countries.
Authorities have not yet reported any damage or casualties resulting from this most recent quake.
