Main Suspect Unrepentant Following Fatal Mob Attack in Satkhira

The primary accused in the lynching of a 38-year-old man in Debhata upazila, Satkhira, has stated that while he is guilty in the eyes of the law, he feels no remorse for his actions. Fazlul Huq Amini, aged 45, made the remarks on Sunday afternoon, 18 October 2026, as police produced him before a Satkhira court following his arrest in neighbouring Kaliganj upazila.
The victim, Wahiduzzaman Shamim, was subjected to two separate rounds of severe mob beatings on Tuesday, 13 October, after accusations surfaced claiming he had insulted Islam. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries. Amini, who is alleged to have spearheaded the violent mob, claimed during questioning that he believed Shamim was an atheist, citing threatening phone calls he received from abroad as his justification. He maintained that the intention was not to cause death, describing the fatal outcome as an accident and remarking that his actions would ultimately be judged by the Almighty. When asked directly whether he viewed himself as an offender under statutory law, Amini acknowledged his legal guilt but insisted he harboured no regret.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Debhata Police Station, HM Shaheen, confirmed that Amini admitted to his direct involvement in the fatal assault during police interrogation. The suspect expressed a willingness to deliver a formal judicial confession under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before a magistrate. Consequently, investigating officers deemed a custodial remand unnecessary at this stage, and the court subsequently ordered Amini to be remanded into judicial custody at the district jail.
Following the killing, Shamim’s elder brother filed a murder case naming ten identified individuals alongside 200 to 250 unnamed suspects. Law enforcement agencies have so far arrested three named accused listed in the First Information Report (FIR), including Amini, all of whom are currently in prison. Police drives continue across Satkhira district to track down and apprehend the remaining perpetrators involved in the mob violence.
