Major reshuffle in Bangladesh Police as 24 senior officers redeployed

The Ministry of Home Affairs has executed a sweeping administrative reorganization across the senior echelons of the Bangladesh Police force, reassigning 24 high-ranking officers to fresh postings. Issued on Sunday, 4 October, the directive spans three distinct official gazette notifications signed by Tausif Ahmed, Deputy Secretary of the Public Security Division. The orders, encompassing officers of Additional Deputy Inspector General (Addl DIG), DIG, and Superintendent of Police (SP) ranks, take immediate effect under the standard administrative premise of serving public interest.

Of the reassignments, three affect officers of DIG rank, twelve pertain to Additional DIGs, and nine involve officers at the rank of Superintendent of Police. This administrative adjustment touches virtually every crucial arm of the country’s law enforcement apparatus, recalibrating leadership across specialized investigative bodies, intelligence outfits, metropolitan police commands, and training academies.

At the director-general level, Dr Mohammad Akkas Uddin Bhuiyan of the Special Response Unit (SRU) and Mohammad Mahmudur Rahman of the Special Branch (SB) have both been transferred to the Police Staff College, the force’s premier institution for strategic training and administrative development. Meanwhile, Mohammad Hasan Bari Noor, previously serving as DIG within the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has been assigned to the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) police unit. This strategic placement highlights the growing imperative to secure the capital’s metro rail network, a cornerstone of Dhaka’s modern transit infrastructure that demands heightened operational vigilantism and public safety oversight.

The adjustments amongst Superintendents of Police similarly reflect strategic realignments between intelligence, metropolitan, and field commands. ATM Mosharraf Hossain moves from the CID to take up the role of Deputy Commissioner (DC) within the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP). He will be joined in Gazipur by Syed Mohammad Farhad, who transitions from his current post as Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Further shifts involve Mahbubul Alam, relocated from the Police Staff College to assume the responsibilities of Special Superintendent of Police at the CID. Mohammad Humayun Kabir, previously attached to the Central Police Hospital, transfers to the Tourist Police—a specialized branch tasked with ensuring security across major tourist destinations. Additionally, SB Superintendent Ashrafuzzaman moves to the Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) as Deputy Commissioner, while Yasmin Khatun of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) steps into the Special Branch.

At Police Headquarters, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Nishat Angela has been posted to the Tourist Police. In a parallel move, Mohammad Imdad Hussain leaves his position as Deputy Commissioner of the Barishal Metropolitan Police to take command as Superintendent of Police within the Special Response Unit. Completing the announced transfers, Kabir Ahmed transitions from the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) to the Khulna Metropolitan Police as Deputy Commissioner.

Comprehensive reorganisations of this nature are a established feature of administrative governance in Bangladesh. While the ministry’s gazette notifications did not offer detailed rationales for individual moves beyond the standard public interest clause, such postings routinely aim to refresh operational perspectives, balance field experience with administrative duties, and strengthen specialized units. With the directives taking effect immediately, the designated officers are expected to formally assume their new roles across the respective commands in the coming days.
