The arrest was officially confirmed on Wednesday by Additional Superintendent of Police Biplob Kumar Goswami, spokesperson for the SRB-13 Gaibandha camp, through a written briefing delivered to reporters.

According to official case records, the suspect is a resident of Baguria village under Gidari Union in Gaibandha Sadar Upazila. The victim’s husband, 52-year-old Saiful Alam, formally lodged a complaint with Gaibandha Sadar Police Station after learning that Hasan had covertly recorded compromising photographs of his wife on a mobile phone and uploaded them to Facebook. Despite repeated requests from the family to remove the explicit media, the suspect refused to comply.

Detailing the severity of the extortion attempt, SRB officials stated that Hasan subsequently combined the victim’s photographs with images of her husband to exacerbate the harassment. On 3 July, the suspect phoned the victim directly, demanding a ransom of 1.5 million Taka. He threatened to circulate additional explicit material across various social media platforms and websites if the payment was not made promptly.

Faced with ongoing harassment, Saiful Alam filed a case under the Cyber Security Act at Gaibandha Sadar Police Station on 9 July. Following the initiation of legal proceedings, intelligence units from SRB-13 (CPC-3 Gaibandha Camp) and SRB-1 tracked the suspect’s movements to Dhaka. Officers executed a coordinated raid in Uttara on Monday, 28 September, successfully taking Hasan into custody.

Police confirm that cyber harassment involving digital extortion remains a priority concern for intelligence agencies. Additional Superintendent Biplob Kumar Goswami stated that Jahangir Hasan was formally transferred to Gaibandha Sadar Police Station on Wednesday to facilitate further legal processing and court proceedings.
