Man Arrested with Yaba Pills Valued at Over £4,000 in Derai

Police officers in Derai Upazila, Sunamganj, have arrested a 35-year-old man after recovering a large consignment of illegal narcotics during a targeted night-time operation. The suspect was apprehended with 1,305 Yaba tablets, carrying an estimated market value of 652,500 taka.
The operation took place at around 10:30 pm on Monday, 24 August, at the Khalpar Hati Bridge in the Syamarchar area of Charnarchar Union. The suspect, identified as Shish Ahmad, hails from Doulatpur village in neighbouring Sullah Upazila.
Law enforcement personnel initiated the raid based on specific intelligence indicating that a major narcotics transaction was taking place near the bridge. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, a police team led by Derai Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminul Islam and Sub-Inspector (SI) Kanan Kumar Das cordoned off the targeted area.
Upon spotting the police contingent, two individuals attempted to flee the scene on foot. Officers, assisted by local residents who reacted quickly to the chase, managed to corner and apprehend Shish Ahmad. The second suspect took advantage of the darkness and surrounding terrain to escape capture.
Following the apprehension, officers conducted a formal search in the presence of local witnesses. The search yielded seven sealed zip-lock bags hidden on Shish Ahmad’s person, containing a total of 1,305 contraband Yaba pills—a synthetic drug combination of methamphetamine and caffeine. Police officials noted that the seized narcotics were intended for local distribution.
A case has been formally registered at Derai Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act. The case names both the arrested suspect, Shish Ahmad, and the absconding accomplice, identified as 42-year-old Ron Dash from Hasimpur village in Derai Upazila. Following preliminary interrogation and documentation, police produced Shish Ahmad before the court on Tuesday, 25 August.
Derai Police Station OC Aminul Islam confirmed the legal proceedings, stating that anti-narcotics drives across the upazila remain active. He emphasised that law enforcement agencies are continuing operations to dismantle illicit drug networks in the region and bring all individuals involved in drug trafficking to justice.
