Safety Concerns of Smoking on Aircraft

Smoking inside an aircraft is extremely dangerous due to the following factors:

  1. Smoke Detection & Alarm Activation
    • Cigarette smoke can trigger the smoke detector or alarm, causing panic among passengers.
    • False alarms may lead to emergency landings, which can disrupt flight schedules.
  2. Hazardous Chemicals in a Confined Space
    • Aircraft cabins are pressurised and supplied with artificial oxygen.
    • Harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke can spread rapidly in the confined space, creating serious health risks.
  3. Fire Risk
    • Smoke coming into contact with electrical equipment or flammable materials can ignite a fire.
    • Fire on board is among the most dangerous emergencies, as even with firefighting equipment, controlling it quickly is extremely challenging.
    • Even minor negligence can escalate into a major accident.

Authorities frequently warn that smoking on aircraft, even in restrooms, is strictly prohibited due to the high risk to passengers and crew. Airlines impose severe penalties, including fines and potential criminal charges, to discourage such behaviour
