Modi Warns West Bengal Government

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a sharp political message during a massive rally in Kolkata, declaring that what he described as “lawless rule” in West Bengal would soon come to an end. Speaking before a large crowd at the historic Brigade Parade Ground, the Prime Minister criticised the state government led by Mamata Banerjee and predicted that voters would remove the ruling party in the next state election.

The rally, organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party, was held as political preparations intensify ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections, which are widely expected to be announced in April. Political parties across the state have already begun campaigning and mobilising supporters, with large-scale public meetings becoming a central part of the election strategy.

Addressing the gathering, Modi alleged that corruption, intimidation, and administrative irregularities had characterised the governance of the ruling All India Trinamool Congress. He asserted that the people of West Bengal would respond through the democratic process and bring about political change in the next election. According to him, a new administration led by the Bharatiya Janata Party would prioritise development, employment opportunities, and social welfare programmes.

The Prime Minister stated that the visible turnout of people at the rally reflected a growing demand for political transformation in the state. He claimed that once a new government is formed, allegations of corruption and administrative misconduct would be investigated thoroughly and that accountability would be ensured.

Modi also accused the state government of obstructing several welfare programmes introduced by the national government. Among the initiatives he referenced was Ayushman Bharat, a healthcare scheme intended to provide free medical treatment to economically disadvantaged families. According to the Prime Minister, the programme had not been fully implemented in West Bengal, preventing many citizens from accessing its benefits.

He further claimed that tea plantation workers and rural communities had been deprived of several national welfare initiatives due to political disagreements between the state and national administrations. Modi argued that improved coordination between the two levels of government would allow development programmes to reach more people.

During his speech, the Prime Minister also criticised remarks that he said had disrespected India’s President, Droupadi Murmu. He stated that such actions were unacceptable and suggested that members of tribal communities across the state would respond politically to the perceived disrespect.

The rally took place shortly after the conclusion of a statewide political campaign known as the “Parivartan Yatra”, organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party. The campaign began on 2 March from multiple locations across the state and concluded in Kolkata on 10 March. Saturday’s rally at Brigade Parade Ground served as the final event of that campaign.

However, the day was not without tension. Reports indicated that clashes broke out in the Girish Park area of Kolkata between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the ruling party. The confrontation reportedly involved stone throwing and brief street violence before security personnel intervened to restore order. The residence of state minister Shashi Panja is located near the site where the incident occurred.

In addition to political remarks, Modi announced the foundation of development projects in West Bengal worth approximately 188.6 billion rupees. These initiatives are expected to include infrastructure upgrades, transportation improvements, and other public welfare projects aimed at boosting economic growth in the region.

West Bengal’s political landscape has evolved considerably over the past decade, with growing competition between national and regional parties. The following table summarises the outcomes of recent major elections in the state.

Election Year Election Type Total Seats Trinamool Congress Bharatiya Janata Party Left Parties Congress
2016 State Assembly 294 211 3 32 44
2021 State Assembly 294 213 77 0 0
2019 National Parliamentary 42 22 18 0 2
2024 National Parliamentary 42 29 12 0 1

Political analysts suggest that the forthcoming state election will be one of the most closely watched contests in India. The growing electoral presence of the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal has transformed the state’s political dynamics, making the next vote a significant test for both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition.

As campaigning intensifies over the coming months, observers expect further large rallies, political debates, and competing development promises to shape the electoral narrative across the state.
