A young man died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Debhata upazila of Satkhira after allegedly being beaten twice over accusations of making derogatory remarks about Islam. Ohiduzzaman Shamim died on Tuesday night after a second attack by a group of agitated people inside the hospital, where he had been admitted following an earlier assault.
Shamim was the son of Shamsur Rahman and a resident of Chhoto Shanta village in Debhata upazila.
According to local sources, an audio clip allegedly containing derogatory remarks about Islam circulated on social media on Tuesday morning. The recording reportedly sparked anger and tension in the area.
At around midday, several people allegedly assaulted Shamim in the Sakhhipur area of the upazila. Following the incident, he returned home and attempted suicide by consuming poison.
His family members subsequently rescued him and took him to Debhata Upazila Health Complex, where he was admitted for treatment.
However, the violence did not end there. At around 9pm, a group of agitated people identifying themselves under the banner of ‘Touhidi Janata’ entered the hospital and allegedly assaulted Shamim again while he was receiving treatment.
His condition deteriorated following the second attack. He was then transferred to Satkhira Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, where he died later that night.
The incident has raised serious concerns about mob violence and the safety of patients receiving treatment in medical facilities. Although the initial assault reportedly stemmed from allegations concerning religious remarks, the claims have not been independently verified.
The incident also highlights the risks of taking the law into one’s own hands in response to allegations circulated on social media. Any complaint involving religious sentiments must be investigated through lawful procedures, rather than being used to justify physical violence.
Debhata Police Station Officer-in-Charge HM Shaheen said police had rescued Shamim from the scene and admitted him to hospital. He confirmed that Shamim was subsequently attacked inside the medical facility.
The officer said the body had been sent to the morgue at Satkhira Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination to help establish the cause of death.
He added that no formal complaint had been filed with the police in connection with the incident as of Tuesday night. Legal action would be taken if a complaint was received, he said.
Further details about those involved in the second attack, how they entered the hospital and what security measures were in place at the time have not yet been disclosed.
A full investigation will be necessary to establish the circumstances surrounding Shamim’s death and identify those responsible for the assaults. The post-mortem findings may also help clarify the medical cause of death.
The incident has drawn attention to the need to protect patients from violence inside healthcare facilities and to ensure that allegations of religious offences are handled through proper legal channels. No allegation, regardless of its nature, gives individuals the right to assault or punish another person outside the law.
