Police recovered the body of a 40-year-old man from the bank of the DND Lake in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, on Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Tapan Shil, a resident of the Mizmizi Alamin Nagar area of Siddhirganj. He worked at a local salon. His family home is in the Sitakunda area of Chattogram.
The body was recovered from the western side of the lake near Paglabari intersection in the Siddhirganj Pool area at around Thursday morning. According to local sources, a man who had gone out for his morning walk noticed the body lying beside the lake and informed the police.
A team from Siddhirganj Police Station subsequently went to the spot, recovered the body and took it to the police station for further procedures.
Local residents said Tapan had not returned home on Wednesday night following an argument with his wife over a family matter. His body was found beside the lake the following morning. However, it was not immediately clear where he had spent the night or how he came to be at the lakeside.
Police have not yet determined how Tapan died. There was no immediate official confirmation indicating whether his death was accidental, natural or the result of any other circumstances. Investigators are examining the available information before drawing any conclusion.
Siddhirganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Emdadul Haque said the body had been recovered and taken to the police station, while Tapan’s wife had been informed of the incident.
The body will be sent to a hospital in Narayanganj for a post-mortem examination. Police said the medical examination would be crucial in establishing the actual cause of death.
Investigators have begun looking into the circumstances surrounding Tapan’s disappearance from home, his whereabouts on Wednesday night and the discovery of his body beside the DND Lake. Further action will be taken based on the post-mortem findings and information gathered during the investigation.
The DND area, which spans parts of Dhaka and Narayanganj, contains a network of water channels and drainage infrastructure and is used by local residents and commuters. Police routinely treat the discovery of an unidentified or unexplained death as a matter requiring investigation, particularly when the circumstances surrounding the death are unclear.
At present, however, authorities have not disclosed any findings suggesting foul play. The cause of Tapan Shil’s death is expected to become clearer after the post-mortem examination and the completion of the initial police inquiry.
