March Fuel Supply Possible With Conservation

Bangladesh can maintain its fuel supply until March if consumption is managed efficiently, stated Energy, Power and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku. Speaking at an urgent press conference at the Secretariat on Wednesday, the minister highlighted that fuel supplies have slowed considerably. “Without adequate fuel, electricity generation becomes extremely difficult. There may be minor gas shortages, but any necessary load-shedding should not be unbearable,” he explained. He urged citizens to adopt conservative usage practices to help the country navigate the crisis.

Minister Tuku emphasised that the current situation surpasses the impact of the Russia–Ukraine conflict on global energy supplies. “Without collective cooperation, it will be challenging to overcome this massive crisis. The resources we have must be used judiciously. If everyone conserves, the supply can continue,” he said, assuring the public that load-shedding will not occur during Iftar, Tarawih, or Sahri hours.

Global Context and Supply Measures

“The problem is not unique to Bangladesh. Worldwide, countries are competing intensely to secure energy resources. Predicting shortages is difficult, and regular supplies may decrease,” the minister said. To mitigate potential shortages, the government has sought to procure additional fuel from the open market, though responses have been limited. Strategic management and conservation remain crucial, particularly as industrial activity is expected to slow during the Eid holidays, which should ease electricity demand slightly. Gas supplies to various sectors will also be rationed to ensure stability.

Diesel Sales and Border Monitoring

Minister Tuku reported a sudden, unusual spike in domestic diesel sales, likely due to cross-border price differentials encouraging smuggling. He noted that authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Increased border surveillance has been implemented, and District Commissioners along with law enforcement agencies in border districts have been instructed to take preventive measures. If necessary, rationing of diesel sales in border regions will be introduced, with some areas already seeing control measures in place.

Conservation Campaigns and Public Guidance

The minister announced that the government is launching awareness campaigns to promote fuel conservation. “During this crisis, extravagant lighting in shopping malls should be avoided. This is a global challenge, not only a national one. The ministry will issue detailed instructions to guide energy usage,” he added.

Energy Supply Overview

Energy Type Status Measures Planned Remarks
Electricity Limited, steady flow Controlled load-shedding No load-shedding during Iftar/Sahri
Natural Gas Reduced supply, some shortages Rationing for industry and sectors Eid holidays may reduce demand
Diesel Sales unusually high Border rationing if necessary Smuggling under close surveillance

Minister Tuku stressed that disciplined consumption and effective management are vital to sustaining Bangladesh’s energy supply through March. Citizens’ cooperation will be key to preventing severe shortages and ensuring continuity in electricity and fuel distribution.
