Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has apologised for making critical comments about the club’s management and squad-building strategy following their defeat by Atletico Madrid. However, the Argentina international has not escaped punishment, with the club fining him over his remarks, according to the BBC.
The 28-year-old centre-back sparked controversy after United’s 2-0 defeat by Atletico in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Speaking after the match, Martinez suggested that head coach Michael Carrick had not been provided with a sufficiently strong squad to compete at the highest level.
He also expressed his expectation that Manchester United would invest more in the squad and called for greater involvement from technical director Jason Wilcox. His comments prompted fresh debate about the club’s recruitment policy and the support being provided to its coaching staff.
Martinez met the club’s leadership and coaching staff on Thursday to discuss the situation. Following the meeting, he issued a statement on social media acknowledging that his comments had been inappropriate and expressing regret over the incident.
“Today I met with the club’s leadership and the coach. It was a very positive discussion, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday’s match,” Martinez said.
He also acknowledged that his emotions had influenced his reaction to the defeat.
“Everyone knows that I am an emotional person and that I live football intensely. In the frustration of losing, I expressed my feelings at a time and in a place that may not have been right, and for that I apologise,” he added.
The defender subsequently explained that anger and frustration had driven his comments. He also stressed the importance of unity within the club, admitting that his remarks had not helped bring people together.
“We are at our best when we are all united,” Martinez said in his statement, acknowledging that his words had not contributed positively to the situation.
Despite his apology, the club has reportedly imposed a financial penalty on the Argentine. The incident has added to the scrutiny surrounding United’s internal affairs at a time when the team is struggling to establish consistency.
Former United captain Roy Keane also weighed in on the club’s situation. Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Keane described the situation at Old Trafford as “a bit of a circus”, reflecting the wider criticism directed at the club.
Attention has now turned to United’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Leeds United on Sunday. It remains to be seen whether Carrick will include Martinez in his plans for the match following the controversy. No decision on his selection has been confirmed.
Martinez’s longer-term future at Old Trafford is also uncertain. His current contract with Manchester United is due to expire at the end of the season, although the club has the option to extend it by a further 12 months. Reports suggest there are doubts over whether United will exercise that option.
The uncertainty comes amid a difficult period for the club. United collected just six points from their first six Premier League matches this season, recording their worst start to a league campaign in 40 years. They were sitting 13th in the table, underlining the challenges facing the team.
With performances on the pitch under pressure and questions being raised about the club’s management, Martinez’s public criticism has created another issue for United to address.
His apology may help ease tensions, but the reported fine shows that the club has taken the matter seriously. Whether the defender features against Leeds and whether United decide to extend his contract could offer further indications of his standing at Old Trafford.
