Three separate fire incidents caused extensive damage in Gazipur on Monday (1 December) between early dawn and mid-morning. From 5 am to 10 am, fires broke out in Tongi’s Majukhan area, the Ambag Purbo Para area under Konabari Police Station, and the Chandra Polli Bidyut Dighi Par area of Kaliakair Municipality.
According to the Fire Service and eyewitnesses, the first fire started in a cotton warehouse in Majukhan, quickly spreading to two adjacent warehouses. Four units of the Fire Service brought the blaze under control within an hour, but by then all three warehouses had been destroyed.
At around 9 am, another fire broke out in a jhut warehouse owned by Palash Mia in Ambag Purbo Para. Four Fire Service units controlled the fire in just over an hour, though the warehouse’s contents were completely burnt.
Additionally, around 9:30 am, a fire erupted in a tin-shed colony near Chandra Polli Bidyut Dighi Par in Kaliakair. Eighty rooms of the colony were reduced to ashes. Most residents, who work in garment and factory jobs, were away at their workplaces and unable to save their belongings. Four units brought the fire under control after ninety minutes of effort.
Mohammad Mamun, Deputy Director of Gazipur Fire Service, said the fires at all three locations had been brought under control. No casualties were reported. The cause of the fires and the extent of the damage will be determined after investigation.
