Masters says FIFA has ‘pressed its own self-destruct button’

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has launched a strong criticism of FIFA president Gianni Infantino over a controversial plan involving the commercial and ticketing rights for the World Cup and other FIFA competitions, arguing that football’s global governing body has created a crisis of its own making.

Masters said FIFA had effectively ‘pressed its own self-destruct button’ through the initiative, which was ultimately abandoned after facing significant opposition from European football authorities and other confederations.

At the centre of the dispute was a proposed new commercial entity, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise, intended to manage commercial rights and ticketing operations for FIFA competitions, including the World Cup. Under Infantino’s plan, 21 per cent of the new organisation was to be sold to a private investment firm.

The proposal quickly became contentious. UEFA, the governing body of European football, led opposition to the project, with several other confederations also expressing strong reservations. The dispute became serious enough for UEFA to threaten a boycott of FIFA competitions, underlining the depth of the disagreement between FIFA and some of the sport’s most influential regional organisations.

The plan was subsequently cancelled, but the controversy has continued to put pressure on Infantino and his leadership of FIFA. The episode has also raised broader questions about how major decisions affecting international football should be handled and the extent to which FIFA should involve other football authorities in commercial and strategic matters.

The English Football Association’s decision to withdraw its support for Infantino has also drawn attention. Masters backed that decision and called for a future FIFA presidential candidate capable of bringing the divided football community together.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Masters described the dispute as a problem created by FIFA itself.

‘This is a problem of FIFA’s own making,’ he said.

He went on to deliver an even stronger assessment of the situation, saying: ‘It’s their own self-inflicted act. They have pressed their own self-destruct button and now they have to find solutions to all the problems that have arisen from it.’

The controversy comes against the backdrop of FIFA’s increasingly complex commercial landscape. The World Cup and other major FIFA tournaments generate substantial global interest, with broadcasting, sponsorship, ticketing and commercial partnerships forming a central part of the organisation’s financial structure. Any attempt to alter how those rights are managed can therefore have implications well beyond FIFA’s internal administration.

The proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise appears to have exposed tensions over those commercial arrangements, particularly when major football bodies felt that the proposed structure had not secured sufficient consensus. The opposition from UEFA and other confederations demonstrated the difficulty of introducing significant changes across an international football system involving numerous governing bodies and stakeholders.

For Masters, the immediate issue is now not simply the abandoned commercial plan but the wider challenge of restoring unity within the sport. His call for a new type of leadership reflects concerns that disagreements between FIFA and other football authorities could weaken cooperation across the international game.

Although the proposed investment arrangement will no longer proceed, the political consequences of the dispute remain. Infantino faces continued scrutiny over his leadership, while FIFA must address the divisions exposed by the controversy and rebuild confidence among its regional partners.

Masters’ comments therefore amount to more than criticism of a single abandoned project. They represent a broader demand for greater unity and consensus in the administration of international football, with the next phase of FIFA leadership likely to face close attention from federations and football authorities around the world.
