Measles Death Toll Reaches 741 After Three More Child Fatalities

Three more children showing symptoms consistent with measles have died across Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, pushing the country’s overall measles-related death toll to 741, according to the latest daily situation report released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday.

The report states that the deaths occurred between 8:00 a.m. on Sunday and 8:00 a.m. on Monday. None of the latest fatalities had been laboratory-confirmed as measles cases at the time of reporting. Of the three children, one was from the Dhaka Division, while the remaining two deaths were recorded in the Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions.

Since 15 March, a total of 648 children have died after developing symptoms associated with measles. In addition, 93 children have died from laboratory-confirmed measles infections, bringing the cumulative death toll to 741.

The outbreak continues to place considerable pressure on Bangladesh’s healthcare system. During the latest 24-hour reporting period, health authorities recorded 947 new suspected measles cases across the country. This has increased the total number of people reporting measles-like symptoms since 15 March to 106,565.

The DGHS also reported 159 newly confirmed measles infections during the same period. Since the outbreak began, laboratory testing has confirmed measles in 12,791 children nationwide.

Hospitals have continued to receive large numbers of patients requiring treatment. According to the latest figures, 89,734 people with suspected measles have been admitted to hospitals since 15 March. Of those, 86,062 have recovered and been discharged, reflecting the significant burden the outbreak has placed on medical facilities while also highlighting the large number of patients who have successfully completed treatment.

Although no new laboratory-confirmed measles deaths were reported during the latest reporting period, the continued fatalities among children with measles symptoms underline the ongoing public health challenge. Health authorities have continued to monitor suspected and confirmed cases separately, as laboratory confirmation may not be immediately available for every patient before death.

The steady rise in suspected infections and the persistence of child fatalities indicate that measles remains a serious concern in many parts of the country. Public health officials continue to track the outbreak through daily surveillance reports as hospitals manage new admissions and confirmed cases.
