Measles Death Toll Rises to 825 as 904 New Cases Reported

Three more people have died in Bangladesh with symptoms associated with measles over the past 24 hours, while 904 new cases of confirmed measles or measles-like symptoms have been reported during the same period.

The latest figures have taken the combined number of deaths linked to measles and suspected measles symptoms since 15 March to 825, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The updated figures were released on Tuesday (28 July) in the DGHS’s latest report on the country’s measles situation. The report provides a continuing snapshot of the scale of the outbreak, with a substantial number of suspected cases recorded across the country and thousands of patients requiring hospital treatment.

According to the health authorities, 730 children have died after developing symptoms associated with measles since 15 March. A further 95 children have died after being confirmed as having measles. Taken together, the two categories account for 825 deaths during the period.

The distinction between suspected measles cases and confirmed infections is significant. While the overall figures include patients presenting with symptoms consistent with measles, laboratory or clinical confirmation is used to identify cases officially classified as measles. The DGHS has reported the two figures separately in its latest assessment.

The number of suspected measles patients recorded across the country since 15 March has reached 124,745, while the number of confirmed measles cases stands at 15,555, according to the latest health directorate data.

Hospital admissions have also remained high. A total of 107,654 patients have been admitted to hospitals during the period under review. Of those, 103,467 patients have already recovered sufficiently to receive discharge and return home.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can spread rapidly, particularly among children who have not received adequate vaccination. Common symptoms include fever, cough, a runny nose, red or watery eyes and a distinctive rash. In severe cases, the disease can lead to complications such as pneumonia, dehydration and other serious health problems, especially among young children and those with weakened immunity.

The latest figures indicate that the health authorities continue to face a significant burden from both suspected and confirmed cases. The high number of hospital admissions also points to the pressure placed on healthcare facilities as patients seek treatment for measles and related complications.

At the same time, the large number of patients who have been discharged suggests that many affected individuals have responded to treatment and recovered. However, the continued reporting of new cases and deaths means that the situation remains a serious public health concern.

The DGHS’s latest report therefore highlights two parallel trends: a large number of patients have already received hospital care and returned home, but new infections and deaths continue to be recorded. The figures are likely to keep the focus on disease surveillance, timely diagnosis and access to appropriate medical treatment, particularly for children who develop severe symptoms.

For families, health authorities generally stress the importance of seeking medical attention when children develop persistent fever, rashes or other symptoms associated with measles. Early assessment can help identify complications and ensure that seriously ill patients receive appropriate care without delay.

The latest update comes as Bangladesh continues to monitor the spread of measles and measles-like illnesses nationwide. With more than 124,000 suspected cases recorded since 15 March and the combined death toll reaching 825, the scale of the reported outbreak remains a major concern for the country’s public health system.
