Mentally Ill Man Dies After Assault

A 30-year-old man, identified as Md. Jasim Uddin, has died after sustaining injuries in an assault in Feni, Bangladesh, in an incident that has prompted a police investigation. He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Feni General Hospital in the early hours of Sunday.

According to police and hospital sources, the victim, originally from Ronkeli village in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet and son of the late Tamshir Ali, was reportedly a person with mental health disabilities. Authorities stated that he was found injured following an altercation in the area surrounding the town’s Boro Mosque on Saturday night.

Eyewitness accounts, as relayed by officials, suggest that the incident occurred shortly before 11:00 pm when a confrontation broke out in the vicinity. He was subsequently assaulted by unknown individuals. Later that night, around 11:00 pm, several unidentified persons brought him to Feni General Hospital in a critically injured condition.

Medical personnel confirmed that the man had visible physical injuries upon admission and was placed under immediate treatment. Despite efforts by attending doctors, he died at approximately 3:45 am on Sunday.

The hospital’s Resident Medical Officer noted that those who brought the patient to the facility could not be identified, and further details regarding the circumstances of his arrival remain unclear. His body was later transferred to the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

Police have confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department has already worked on identifying the deceased. Law enforcement officials stated that preliminary findings indicate a verbal altercation and physical confrontation in the Boro Mosque area prior to the assault. However, they have clarified that the incident does not appear to be a case of mob lynching. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events and identify those responsible.

Authorities have emphasised that the victim’s mental health condition is being taken into account as part of the inquiry, while efforts continue to trace witnesses and collect CCTV or other available evidence from the surrounding area.
