MFS merchant hacked and robbed of three lakh taka in Adabor

A mobile financial services (bKash) businessman was hacked and robbed of 300,000 BDT and a mobile telephone on Road 7 in the Adabor area of Dhaka. The incident has been linked to the resurgence of a local youth gang known as the ‘Kobji Kata’ group. Although the former leader of the gang, Anwar (alias Pani Anwar), remains incarcerated, the group reportedly continues its criminal operations under the leadership of his close associate, Abu Sayeed.

The armed robbery transpired on Tuesday, 16 June, at approximately 10:30 am. Local residents rescued the injured merchant, Shafiqul Islam, and transferred him to the emergency department of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where he is currently undergoing clinical treatment.

Description of the Attack

According to the victim’s relative, Md. Muslim, Shafiqul Islam had arrived at his commercial outlet in the morning carrying 300,000 BDT in cash from his residence. Shortly after opening the shop, a group of four to five young men armed with large cleavers (chapatis) arrived at the premises. Without warning, the perpetrators struck the merchant on his right hand with a cleaver. The assailants then seized the cash alongside the mobile telephone utilized for bKash transactions before fleeing the scene.

Gang Operations and Territorial Influence

Local residents report that muggings, robberies, and violent activities have become frequent occurrences in Adabor. On the night of Monday, 15 June, mere hours prior to the attack on the businessman, several garages in the Adabor Road 10 Balur Math area were looted.

An anonymous resident stated that the ‘Kobji Kata’ gang contains an estimated 15 to 20 active members. Its current leader, Abu Sayeed, who also served a prolonged prison sentence, assumed control due to the incarceration of his childhood friend, Anwar.

He confirmed that police personnel are actively working to apprehend the suspects involved in the assault.
