Missing Teenage Boy’s Body Recovered From Matamuhuri River

The body of a thirteen-year-old boy, who was swept away by powerful floodwaters in the Chakaria sub-district of Cox’s Bazar, has been recovered by a fire service diving team. The deceased, identified as Sujit Das, son of Tufan Das, was a resident of the Jaldaspada neighbourhood within the Kaiyarbil union. Emergency workers retrieved his body from a section of the Matamuhuri River adjacent to his village at approximately 3:00 pm on Sunday, 12 July 2026.

According to local sources, days of relentless torrential rain coupled with an aggregate rush of water from upstream hilly terrains triggered severe flooding across the region. The sheer volume of water caused an overflow, sending a violent current cascading across a local rural road directly towards the Matamuhuri River. The accident occurred at around 3:00 pm on Saturday when Sujit was walking home along the submerged road in the company of two friends. In a split second, the teenager lost his footing on the slippery tarmac, fell into the deluged roadside ditch, and was instantly carried away by the rushing water. Although his companions raised the alarm and local residents initiated an immediate search, the depth of the water and the speed of the current thwarted their initial attempts.

Makki Iqbal Hossain, the Chairman of the Kaiyarbil Union Parishad, stated that community-led rescue operations began immediately after the incident. However, the proximity to the overflowing Matamuhuri River meant that the water currents were far too hazardous for ordinary villagers to navigate safely. The local authorities subsequently requested specialised reinforcement from the fire service.

Didarul Haq, the North Zone In-charge of the Cox’s Bazar Fire Service, explained that local rescue teams faced severe operational difficulties due to the treacherous water conditions. Recognising the complexity of the situation, emergency officials summoned an expert diving team from the neighbouring Chittagong division. Following a joint search operation that lasted nearly twenty-four hours, the divers finally located and retrieved the teenager’s body. Following the completion of mandatory legal formalities, the body was officially handed over to the grieving family through a local Union Parishad member.
