Mitchell Starc Makes Test Cricket History with 450 Wickets

Australia’s left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc has reached a historic milestone in Test cricket, becoming the first left-arm bowler to claim 450 wickets in the longest format. The achievement also saw him break a record held by Australian pace legend Glenn McGrath, further cementing Starc’s place among the game’s leading fast bowlers.

The 36-year-old reached the landmark on the third day of a Test match against South Africa in Gqeberha. He dismissed South African batter Wiaan Mulder during the first session to claim his 450th Test wicket, marking a significant moment in a career built on pace, swing and aggressive bowling.

Starc’s achievement is particularly notable given the history of left-arm bowling in Test cricket. Several celebrated left-arm bowlers have enjoyed remarkable success in the format, but none had previously reached the 450-wicket mark. Pakistan great Wasim Akram finished his Test career with 414 wickets, while Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Rangana Herath took 433.

By surpassing both figures, Starc has established a new benchmark for left-arm bowlers in Test cricket. His milestone reflects not only his wicket-taking ability but also his longevity and capacity to remain effective at the highest level of international competition.

The Australian quick has another record to his name. He became the fastest bowler, measured by the number of deliveries bowled, to reach 450 Test wickets. Starc needed just 20,577 balls to achieve the feat, compared with the 23,474 deliveries McGrath required to reach the same total.

That represents a difference of 2,897 deliveries, highlighting the speed with which Starc has accumulated his wickets. While the number of balls required to reach a milestone does not, by itself, determine a bowler’s overall standing, it provides a useful measure of wicket-taking efficiency across a career.

Starc’s latest accomplishment also places him in an exclusive group within Australian Test cricket. Before him, only three Australian bowlers had reached 450 wickets in the format: Shane Warne, McGrath and Nathan Lyon. Starc has now become the fourth Australian to join the group.

Each of those bowlers made a significant contribution to Australia’s Test history. Warne was renowned for his leg-spin, McGrath for his accuracy and relentless consistency, and Lyon for his longevity as a specialist off-spinner. Starc’s inclusion adds a different dimension to the list, with his left-arm pace offering Australia a potent attacking option.

Fast bowlers face considerable physical demands in Test cricket, where long spells, repeated workloads and changing playing conditions can make sustained success difficult. Maintaining pace and accuracy over an extended international career requires both skill and durability. Starc’s progress to 450 wickets underlines his ability to meet those challenges while continuing to threaten opposition batters.

His record is also a landmark for left-arm bowling, a discipline that has produced several of Test cricket’s most celebrated players. With 450 wickets now behind him, Starc has set a new standard for left-arm bowlers and added another notable achievement to his international career.

The milestone places him alongside some of Australia’s most accomplished Test bowlers and strengthens his legacy in the format. As his career continues, further wickets could extend the record and make the benchmark even more difficult for future generations to surpass.
