Most buildings in Old Dhaka are vulnerable, and there are 6-7 storey houses built without any proper plan on plots smaller than a katha, according to Engineer Md. Riazul Islam, Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK).
On Saturday, after inspecting various buildings in Banshal, he informed journalists about the situation. During his visit, he also instructed the removal of illegal tents and shelters in front of several buildings. He said that RAJUK is undertaking new planned urban development while preserving the heritage of the century-old buildings of Old Dhaka.
Engineer Md. Riazul Islam added that if the design of the building in Khasaituli, whose railing collapsed during the earthquake, is not submitted within the next seven days, the building will be sealed.
He further stated that constructing a house on multiple plots may cause some initial inconvenience. However, once the new planned house is obtained, the loss will be compensated. The height and other facilities of the new building will ensure they are not financially disadvantaged.
