Nationwide One-Minute Blackout to Honour 25 March Martyrs

In solemn remembrance of the brutal 25 March 1971 genocide, the Government of Bangladesh has announced a symbolic one-minute nationwide blackout. The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs issued a statement on Monday, 23 March, detailing the commemorative event.

Observance Details

The symbolic blackout is scheduled for 25 March 2026 from 10:30 pm to 10:31 pm. During this time, all citizens are urged to switch off non-essential lights to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the horrific crackdown by the Pakistani army on unarmed Bengali civilians.

However, essential facilities—including Key Point Installations (KPIs), emergency services, and foreign missions in Bangladesh—will remain operational and are exempt from the blackout.

This day is officially observed as Genocide Day, marking the atrocities committed in 1971, which stand as a grim chapter in Bangladesh’s history. The Ministry emphasised that to maintain the solemnity of the occasion, no government, semi-government, autonomous, or private buildings are permitted to display decorative lighting on the night of 25 March.

Energy Conservation and National Sentiment

Earlier, on 8 March, following a preparatory meeting, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announced that due to the global energy crisis and electricity conservation concerns, nationwide illumination will also be avoided during the forthcoming Independence and National Day on 26 March. This decision aligns with a broader effort to combine remembrance with responsible energy usage.

Minister Ahmed noted that the one-minute blackout serves as a powerful symbol of national unity and respect for the martyrs, allowing citizens to collectively reflect on the tragic events of 25 March and reaffirm their commitment to preserving the country’s hard-won independence.

The one-minute blackout represents more than the absence of light; it is a moment for the nation to pause, remember, and honour the victims of one of the darkest nights in Bangladesh’s history. Citizens across cities and villages are expected to participate, turning off lights and observing a minute of silent reflection, reinforcing a shared commitment to the values of freedom, resilience, and unity.

This national initiative not only commemorates the sacrifices of 1971 but also serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of vigilance, peace, and collective memory in safeguarding Bangladesh’s sovereignty.
