NCP Leader Jailed In Embezzlement and Extortion Case

A district-level leader of the National Citizen Party has been remanded to prison in Bogura following his arrest in connection with a long-standing case involving alleged embezzlement and extortion. The accused, Mizanur Rahman Sagar, was serving as Joint Member Secretary of the party’s district committee at the time of his detention, according to party sources.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that Sagar was apprehended at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Friday from the Jaleshwaritala Kali Temple area of Bogura town. He was produced before the court the following afternoon, where the presiding judge ordered that he be sent to jail pending further legal proceedings.

Background to the Allegations

The case originates from an incident said to have occurred on the night of 30 August 2014. According to the formal complaint, Rubel Pramanik was having tea in front of Government Azizul Haque College when Sagar and four to five associates allegedly arrived on motorcycles. The complainant asserts that he was forcibly taken to a secluded area behind the college auditorium, where he was physically assaulted and pressured to pay two lakh taka in extortion money.

When Pramanik refused the demand, the accused allegedly used iron rods and sharp weapons to inflict injuries. The complaint further states that a total of 51,100 taka was forcibly transferred from the victim’s financial accounts—28,300 taka from a mobile-based financial service account and 22,800 taka from a bank account.

Below is a summary of the key details of the case:

Subject Details
Date of Incident 30 August 2014
Complainant Rubel Pramanik
Accused Mizanur Rahman Sagar and 4–5 others
Allegations Abduction, assault, extortion, embezzlement
Extortion Demand 200,000 taka
Funds Allegedly Taken 51,100 taka
Date of Arrest 20 February (night)
Court Order to Jail 21 February (afternoon)

Additional Superintendent of Police Mostafa Monjur stated that Sagar had been an absconding accused named in a court warrant for several years. Acting on confidential intelligence, officers were able to locate and arrest him after a prolonged period in hiding. The charges are said to stem not only from alleged financial misconduct but also from a business dispute that reportedly escalated into violence and coercion.

Meanwhile, district party president Engineer S. M. A. Mahmud acknowledged that Sagar held a district-level organisational post but clarified that he had no position at the central level. He claimed that the case was filed on 30 October of the previous year and that Sagar had been incorporated into the district committee on 1 December, asserting that he had not previously been aware of the matter.

The party leadership has indicated that disciplinary action will be taken if the allegations are substantiated following internal review and judicial determination.
