Mizanur Rahman (Sagar), Joint Member Secretary of the Bogura District unit of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has been sent to jail in connection with a case filed over allegations of extortion and embezzlement. He was produced before a court on Saturday noon, after which the judge ordered his detention in jail. Following the incident, the party temporarily relieved him of his organizational duties.
According to police sources, Mizanur Rahman was arrested on Friday at around 10:30 pm from in front of the Jaleshwaritala Kali Temple area in Bogura town by Sadar Police Station officers. Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Hossain Muhammad Raihan stated that Mizanur was a fugitive accused named in an arrest warrant. Police had been searching for him for some time and arrested him based on confidential information.
According to the case statement, in August 2025, Mizanur Rahman along with four to five others allegedly demanded BDT 200,000 in extortion from a businessman named Rubel Pramanik. When the businessman refused to pay, he was reportedly assaulted with iron rods and sharp weapons. It is further alleged that BDT 28,300 was taken from his bKash account and BDT 22,800 in cash was forcibly taken.
A summary of the allegations is provided below:
| Type of Allegation | Details |
|---|---|
| Extortion demand | BDT 200,000 |
| Nature of assault | Attack with rods and sharp weapons |
| Money taken via bKash | BDT 28,300 |
| Cash taken | BDT 22,800 |
| Total immediate amount taken | BDT 51,100 |
Meanwhile, NCP Bogura District Organizing Secretary Shawkat Imran confirmed Mizanur Rahman’s party affiliation but claimed that the case stemmed from a business transaction dispute rather than extortion. Police, however, stated that the matter remains under investigation.
In a press release issued at around 8:00 pm on Saturday, the NCP Bogura District unit announced that Mizanur Rahman had been temporarily relieved of his position due to the allegations of extortion and embezzlement and for failing to inform the organization about the matter. He has been served a notice asking him to submit a written explanation to the Convener and Member Secretary as to why he should not be permanently removed from the party.
Law enforcement authorities have stated that efforts are ongoing to arrest the other accused individuals named in the case. Further legal action will be taken after a thorough investigation and verification of the allegations.
Observers believe that regardless of political affiliation, anyone found guilty of criminal charges must face legal consequences. Maintaining neutrality in law enforcement is considered essential for good governance.
