Nine Students Expelled for Chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ at School

Nine students have been issued transfer certificates (TCs) by the authorities of Gopalganj District School after chanting political slogans inside a classroom. The decision was taken on Thursday (5 November), following a review of an investigation committee’s findings, the school’s headteacher, Md Zia, has confirmed.

According to school sources, the incident took place on 6 October, shortly after the lunch break. Several students from Classes Eight, Nine and Ten reportedly gathered inside one of the school’s classrooms and chanted the slogans, ‘Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu’. The incident was recorded on a mobile phone, and the video later circulated widely on Facebook, attracting considerable public attention.

The circulation of the footage prompted the school authorities to investigate the incident. On 7 October, a seven-member investigation committee was formed, with assistant teacher Md Iqbal Hossain appointed as its head. The committee was tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and identifying the students involved.

As part of its investigation, the committee reviewed footage from the school’s CCTV cameras alongside the video shared on social media. After examining the available material, it prepared a report outlining its findings.

The report was submitted to the headteacher on Wednesday (4 November). Following a review of the findings, the school authorities decided to issue transfer certificates to the nine students concerned, effectively ending their enrolment at the institution.

Md Iqbal Hossain, head of the investigation committee, said the committee had examined both the CCTV footage and the video circulated on social media before completing its investigation.

He confirmed that the report had been submitted to the headteacher and that the decision to issue the transfer certificates was subsequently taken by the school authorities on the basis of the findings.

Headteacher Md Zia said several students had chanted political slogans inside the school premises on 6 October. He was not present at the time, as he was attending prayers.

He said that, after finishing his prayers, he received a telephone call from an intelligence agency seeking information about the incident. He subsequently spoke to other teachers and confirmed what had happened.

According to the headteacher, the decision against the students was taken in accordance with instructions from higher authorities.

The incident has brought renewed attention to the challenges schools face in maintaining discipline and managing political activities within educational institutions. Schools are generally expected to provide an environment focused on learning, where students can pursue their education without disruption.

The disciplinary action against the nine students also raises questions about the implications for their continuing education. A transfer certificate allows a student to seek admission to another institution, but the immediate consequences of such a decision can be significant, particularly when it interrupts an ongoing academic year.

However, the school authorities have not provided further details about the students’ future educational arrangements. No statement from the students or their guardians regarding the decision was included in the available information. It also remains unclear whether the families intend to challenge the school’s decision.

For now, the nine students have been issued transfer certificates following the completion of the school’s internal investigation.
