Nitin Menon Joins Elite Panel For Bangladesh Series

Internationally acclaimed ICC Elite Panel umpire Nitin Menon is set to temporarily step away from Indian Premier League (IPL) duties to officiate in the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series between Bangladesh and New Zealand, beginning on 17 April. His appointment reflects his continued standing among the most trusted match officials in world cricket and forms part of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) standard global officiating allocations.

Menon is currently engaged in the ongoing IPL season in India, widely regarded as the most commercially prominent T20 franchise tournament in world cricket. Despite the demanding schedule, he will travel to Bangladesh to fulfil his international commitments before returning to IPL duties once the series concludes.

Confirmed officiating schedule

Under the ICC’s confirmed assignment plan, Menon will stand as on-field umpire in the opening ODI in Dhaka on 17 April. He will then officiate in the third ODI in Chattogram on 23 April. In addition, he is scheduled to serve as the television umpire during the second ODI in Mirpur on 20 April, ensuring his involvement across all matches in the series in different officiating capacities.

Previous assignments in Bangladesh

This will not be Menon’s first experience officiating in Bangladesh. He has previously taken charge of matches in several high-profile bilateral and ICC fixtures hosted in the country. Notably, he officiated during the Bangladesh–South Africa Test series in 2024 and also stood in a Bangladesh–New Zealand ODI series held in Mirpur ahead of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. These prior assignments have given him substantial familiarity with Bangladesh’s playing conditions and venues.

Match officials for the ODI series

The ICC has assembled a strong and experienced panel for the three-match ODI series, combining elite international officials with seasoned local umpires.

Role Official
On-field umpire Nitin Menon (India)
On-field umpire Richard Illingworth (England)
TV umpire (selected matches) Nitin Menon
Match referee Andy Pycroft
Local umpires Masudur Rahman Mukul, Gazi Sohel, Morshed Ali Khan

Broader diplomatic and sporting backdrop

Menon’s inclusion has attracted additional attention given the broader context of fluctuating cricketing and diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and India in recent years. Periodic tensions and disruptions in bilateral sporting exchanges have, at times, raised questions about cross-border participation in cricketing assignments.

Against this backdrop, the presence of a high-profile Indian umpire in a bilateral series hosted in Bangladesh is being viewed by some observers as an indication of continued professional cooperation within the ICC’s neutral officiating framework, regardless of wider geopolitical sensitivities.

Balancing global cricket commitments

The arrangement also highlights the increasingly complex scheduling landscape faced by elite international umpires. With franchise tournaments such as the IPL running alongside ICC bilateral and global events, governing bodies often coordinate closely to ensure the availability of top-tier officials across competitions.

Elite umpires like Menon are regularly rotated between franchise leagues and international fixtures, reflecting both their experience and the ICC’s emphasis on maintaining high officiating standards across all formats of the game.

Outlook for the series

The Bangladesh–New Zealand ODI series is expected to attract strong interest as both sides continue preparations for upcoming ICC events. Alongside players, the officiating panel—led by experienced figures such as Richard Illingworth and match referee Andy Pycroft—is expected to play a key role in ensuring consistency and fairness throughout the contest.

As the series approaches, attention will remain focused not only on performances on the field but also on the smooth execution of matches under a highly experienced and internationally respected umpiring team.
