Nominal Rise in Stock Market, Trading Volume Falls Further

On Monday, 15 September, the second trading day of the week, all the key indices at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) ended with a slight upward movement. Despite a notable rise in the index during the day, it did not hold until closing. In fact, the number of securities that declined outpaced those that gained, while the overall trading volume fell further.

Market analysis shows that the DSE’s benchmark index, DSEX, gained 6 points, closing at 5,475 points, compared to 5,468 points on Sunday. Similarly, the DS30 Index, comprising 30 selected companies, advanced by 6 points to 2,135 points, up from 2,129 points the previous day. The DSES Shariah Index edged up by 1 point to 1,186 points, compared to 1,185 points on Sunday.

DSE Market Indicators

Index Previous Day (Sunday) Closing (Monday) Change
DSEX (Benchmark) 5,468 5,475 +6
DS30 (Selected 30) 2,129 2,135 +6
DSES (Shariah) 1,185 1,186 +1

Out of 402 companies and units traded on the DSE today, prices of 117 advanced, 199 declined, and 86 remained unchanged.

Total turnover at the DSE stood at ৳706.33 crore, the lowest since 17 August, when turnover was ৳801.71 crore. On Sunday, trading volume was ৳732.56 crore, meaning a decline of ৳26.23 crore in a single day.

The highest trading activity was seen in the shares of Techno Drugs Limited, which recorded transactions worth ৳24.04 crore. By comparison, on Sunday, Robi Axiata Limited topped the list with trades worth ৳24.89 crore.

Meanwhile, at the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), trading also ended with minor gains in all indices. However, the majority of securities recorded price falls, and the overall trading volume at the exchange decreased significantly.

The CASPI Index rose by 7 points, closing at 15,367 points, while the CSCX Index gained 8 points, ending at 9,433 points.

CSE Market Indicators

Index Previous Day (Sunday) Closing (Monday) Change
CASPI (Overall) 15,360 15,367 +7
CSCX 9,425 9,433 +8

At the CSE, 219 companies and units were traded. Among them, prices of 70 increased, 116 decreased, and 33 remained unchanged.

The day’s total turnover at the CSE amounted to ৳8.61 crore, down sharply from ৳12.04 crore on Sunday.

The contrasting picture of nominal index gains but declining turnover across both stock exchanges highlights continued investor caution and a sluggish market environment, despite selective trading activity in a few companies.
