Police officers have apprehended a listed top terrorist, Kalai Sabuj, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in a high-profile murder case, along with an accomplice during overnight raids in Dhaka and Narayanganj. Law enforcement personnel seized a foreign-made pistol and seven rounds of live ammunition during the operation.
The arrests took place late on Wednesday night during coordinated drives in the Konapara area of Demra, Dhaka, and the Rupsi area of Rupganj. Both suspects were formally presented before a Narayanganj court on Thursday morning.
The primary suspect, Kalai Sabuj, resides in the Brahmangaon area of Rupganj, while his associate, Ejajul Haq, is a resident of Bhulta Majhipara in the same upazila.
Providing details on the operation, AHM Salahuddin, Officer-in-Charge of Rupganj Police Station, disclosed that Sabuj had long orchestrated various violent crimes across Rupganj and adjoining areas, including kidnappings, robberies, and homicides. He faces 26 criminal cases, which include seven murder charges. Although a court previously convicted him and handed down a life sentence in one of these murder cases, Sabuj managed to evade authorities by operating from hiding, occasionally returning to Rupganj to execute fresh crimes before slipping away.
The crackdown began when a team from Rupganj Police Station acted on precise intelligence on Wednesday night, raiding a hideout in Demra’s Konapara district. Officers arrested Sabuj on the spot, recovering the firearm and ammunition from his possession.
During initial interrogation, Sabuj disclosed information that led officers to conduct a follow-up raid in the Rupsi area of Rupganj later that night, resulting in the arrest of his key associate, Ejajul. Police confirmed that Ejajul also faces several pending criminal cases at Rupganj Police Station and served as a crucial operative in Sabuj’s criminal network. Authorities have registered fresh charges against Sabuj under the Arms Act as legal proceedings move forward.
