Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Model Police Station Withdrawn Following Bribery Allegations

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirpur Model Police Station, Mohammad Golam Azam, has been officially withdrawn from his current post and attached to the Central Records Office of the Administration Division at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters. The administrative move follows the filing of a formal written complaint involving allegations of bribery and professional misconduct.

The order for his withdrawal was issued on Friday, 1 May, under the signature of the Acting DMP Commissioner, Md. Sarwar. This procedural reassignment serves to remove the officer from active precinct duties while internal administrative reviews or investigations are conducted.

Official Confirmation and Administrative Context

Confirming the development on Saturday, 2 May, the Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Mirpur Division, Md. Mostaque Sarkar, stated that Mohammad Golam Azam had been reassigned to the DMP headquarters for “administrative reasons.” As of Saturday evening, a successor has not yet been appointed to lead the Mirpur Model Police Station.

When questioned by members of the press regarding the specific link between the officer’s withdrawal and the recent bribery allegations, Deputy Commissioner Sarkar maintained a neutral stance. He noted that he was unaware of a direct correlation between the complaint and the transfer order, asserting that such conclusions cannot be drawn until the relevant investigations have reached a formal conclusion.

Details of the Bribery Allegations

The administrative action was taken exactly five days after a formal complaint was lodged against Mohammad Golam Azam. On 26 April, a local resident identified as Samsad Ara Sathi submitted a written allegation to the DMP Commissioner, accusing the Officer-in-Charge of financial extortion.

According to the complainant, the OC had allegedly demanded and accepted bribes under the guise of assisting her in reclaiming possession of a market property. The specifics of the allegation include:

  • The Monetary Claim: The complainant alleges that a total of 500,000 BDT (five lakh) was paid to the officer in two separate instalments.

  • The Intermediaries: Samsad Ara Sathi claimed that the OC utilized two Sub-Inspectors (SIs) from the same police station to facilitate the collection of the funds.

  • Failure of Duty: Despite the alleged payment, the complainant stated that the police failed to recover the property. Furthermore, she reported being subjected to physical assault by the illegal occupants of the market.

  • Continued Extortion: Sathi asserted that even after receiving the initial 500,000 BDT, the Officer-in-Charge continued to demand additional payments, eventually compelling her to seek redress from the DMP Commissioner.

Complainant and Precinct Response

Speaking via telephone on Saturday night, Samsad Ara Sathi confirmed that she had been made aware of the officer’s removal from the post. However, she noted that she had not yet received any official or formal notification from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police regarding the progress of her complaint or the specific reasons for the OC’s withdrawal.

The Mirpur Model Police Station is one of the busiest and most significant precincts within the capital. The withdrawal of a high-ranking official under the cloud of a corruption allegation is a matter of considerable public and administrative scrutiny. Under standard Bangladesh Police and DMP regulations, an “attachment” to the headquarters often serves as a preliminary step during an inquiry to ensure that the officer in question cannot influence potential witnesses or tamper with precinct records during a probe.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has a structured internal affairs mechanism to handle such allegations. If the preliminary inquiry finds merit in Sathi’s claims, a departmental case or further disciplinary actions may follow. For the time being, Mohammad Golam Azam remains at the DMP headquarters pending further instructions or the findings of the internal investigation.
