Omarzai’s Explosive Century Powers Afghanistan’s Dramatic Revival

Afghanistan produced a remarkable turnaround after losing four wickets for just five runs, eventually posting 221 and defeating Zimbabwe by 19 runs in the second T20 International. The outstanding performance came from Azmatullah Omarzai, who struck a sensational century at number six to rewrite the record books and put his side firmly in control.

Omarzai scored 116 from just 50 deliveries, hitting five fours and 12 sixes at an extraordinary strike rate of 232. His innings transformed what had looked like a disastrous batting performance into a commanding total. It also established a new record for the highest individual score by a batter at number six or lower in T20 Internationals involving full-member nations.

The previous record stood at 89, set by former Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi against Ireland in 2017. Omarzai’s achievement took him past several notable performances in the same category, including Sam Billings’s 87 against the West Indies in 2019, Cameron White’s unbeaten 85 against Sri Lanka in 2010 and David Miller’s unbeaten 85 against Pakistan in 2021.

Afghanistan’s early batting collapse had given Zimbabwe every reason to believe they could dominate the contest. Their bowlers made an exceptional start, claiming four wickets for only five runs and putting the visitors under immense pressure. The top order offered little resistance, with Sediqullah Atal the only batter to reach double figures. Even he managed just 17 from 21 balls before being dismissed in the ninth over.

With Afghanistan struggling to recover, Omarzai launched a counter-attack that changed the entire direction of the innings. He was joined by Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai, and the pair combined to produce a remarkable sixth-wicket partnership.

They added 142 runs from just 59 deliveries, giving Afghanistan an extraordinary recovery. Ijaz provided excellent support, scoring 52 from 27 balls, with five fours and three sixes. His contribution was crucial in allowing Omarzai to continue attacking without carrying the entire responsibility of the innings alone.

The partnership ended when Ijaz was dismissed with Afghanistan’s total at 180. Omarzai continued his assault, eventually departing in the 19th over after completing his magnificent 116-run innings. By then, he had already secured a historic achievement and given his team an excellent opportunity to post a formidable total.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan ensured the innings ended on a high note. He smashed four sixes in an unbeaten six-ball 25, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman remained not out on two. Afghanistan finished on 221, maintaining an impressive scoring rate of 11.05 runs per over.

Chasing 222, Zimbabwe needed a substantial contribution from their leading batters. Captain Sikandar Raza responded with a determined performance, scoring a century to keep his side in contention. It was his second international T20 century, underlining his ability to produce major innings in the shortest format.

Raza fought until the closing stages, but his efforts were not enough to secure victory. Debutant Tafadzwa Siga also offered valuable support during the chase. However, Ryan Burl’s dismissal dealt another significant blow to Zimbabwe’s hopes, making the difficult pursuit even more challenging.

Despite Raza’s century, Zimbabwe could not reach the required target and eventually lost by 19 runs. Afghanistan’s recovery with the bat had proved decisive, while their bowlers did enough to protect the substantial total.

The victory further extended Afghanistan’s dominance in T20 International series against Zimbabwe. It marked their eighth consecutive T20I series triumph over the African side, who have yet to win a T20I series against Afghanistan.

For Afghanistan, the match will be remembered for an extraordinary recovery under pressure. Losing four wickets for five runs would have ended the hopes of many teams, but Omarzai’s remarkable counter-attack, supported by Ijaz’s valuable contribution and Rashid’s explosive finish, turned the contest around. His record-breaking century was not merely an individual milestone; it became the foundation of a memorable team victory.
