Over 155,000 Families Still Stranded by Floods

More than 155,000 families remain marooned as severe flooding and landslides continue to affect large parts of Bangladesh, with the death toll rising to 54 and at least 39 people injured. The latest situation report released by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief on Monday (13 July) shows that hundreds of thousands of people are still struggling with the aftermath of heavy monsoon rains that have inundated vast areas across the country.

According to the ministry, a total of 155,311 families have been stranded by floodwaters, while 609,411 people have been affected in different ways. The worst-hit districts include Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Moulvibazar and Habiganj, where swollen rivers, flash floods and landslides have caused widespread destruction.

The floods have submerged 59 upazilas, while 334 unions and 12 municipalities have suffered varying degrees of damage. Roads, homes, agricultural land and public infrastructure have been affected, disrupting transport, livelihoods and access to essential services in many communities. Emergency responders and local authorities continue to monitor the situation as water levels remain high in several locations.

District-wise casualty figures indicate that Cox’s Bazar has recorded the highest number of fatalities, with 31 deaths. Chattogram has reported 13 deaths, followed by Bandarban with six, Rangamati with three, and Moulvibazar with one. Many of the deaths have been linked to flash floods, landslides and other weather-related incidents triggered by persistent rainfall.

Among the 39 people injured, 24 are from Cox’s Bazar, 12 from Chattogram, two from Bandarban, and one from Khagrachhari. Authorities continue to provide medical assistance to the injured while assessing further humanitarian needs.

To accommodate displaced residents, the government has opened 1,042 emergency shelters across the affected regions. According to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, 38,422 people have already taken refuge in these centres, where food, drinking water and other basic assistance are being provided. Local administrations, volunteers and humanitarian agencies are also supporting relief efforts as many families remain unable to return to their homes.

Recognising the heightened risk of disease outbreaks following widespread flooding, the government has stepped up public health measures. All leave for doctors and healthcare workers in 11 flood-affected districts has been cancelled to ensure uninterrupted medical services.

Medical teams have been deployed to every affected upazila to provide emergency treatment, monitor public health conditions and respond to waterborne diseases, injuries and snakebite incidents, which often increase during prolonged flooding.

Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain Bakul said ensuring healthcare services during the flood emergency remained one of the government’s highest priorities.

He said that leave for doctors and healthcare personnel in the affected districts had been suspended and that essential medical supplies, including medicines, oral rehydration salts, antivenom and other emergency equipment, were being rapidly distributed to the field.

The minister also confirmed that special healthcare operations are currently underway in Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Feni, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Cumilla and Brahmanbaria. A senior physician has been assigned to oversee the overall health situation in each district, while the Ministry of Health’s control room remains operational around the clock to collect information, coordinate emergency responses and monitor developments.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to follow official warnings, remain in designated shelters where necessary and cooperate with local administrations as relief, rescue and recovery operations continue across the flood-hit regions.
