Physical inactivity among adolescents in the country is rising at an alarming rate. A study by the BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health shows that 40 per cent of boys and 43 per cent of girls aged 10 to 19 do not engage in sufficient physical activity. Additionally, 11 per cent of adolescents weigh more than the healthy range. The findings were presented on Thursday at a workshop held at the Directorate General of Health Services’ Non-Communicable Disease Control Programme office.
The study reveals that adolescents in rural areas are more physically active than those in urban settings. The rate of inactivity among boys is highest in the Dhaka division, while among girls it is highest in the Rajshahi division. Compared to 2018, inactivity among boys has increased, whereas the rate among girls has slightly declined.
Researchers also reported that 58 per cent of adolescents participate in sports or exercise, and 65 per cent walk or cycle to school at least five days a week. However, only 40 per cent get adequate sleep, which is less than recommended. Increased screen time on computers and mobile phones contributes significantly to inactivity.
Family and neighbourhood support play an important role in encouraging physical activity. Around 64 per cent of adolescents said their neighbourhood environment is supportive, while 76 per cent noted that their schools provide opportunities for physical activity.
Experts at the workshop stated that promoting physical activity not only reduces healthcare costs but also contributes to national productivity.
