A legal case has been filed against television actor Jaher Alvi and his mother, Nasrin Sultana Shiuli, in connection with the death of his wife, Afra Evnath Khan Ikra. The complaint was lodged on Sunday at Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka by Ikra’s maternal uncle, Sheikh Tanvir Ahmed, who confirmed our representative.
According to the complaint, Alvi and Shiuli allegedly subjected Ikra to two years of neglect and abuse, which culminated in her taking her own life. Sheikh Tanvir Ahmed stated that the case specifically cites “incitement to suicide” as well as prolonged mistreatment as grounds for the legal action.
Pallabi Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, A K M Alamgir Jahan, confirmed the filing, stating, “The case has been registered, and investigation is underway. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the accused. A copy of the charge sheet has been sent to the Immigration Police at the airport. As the accused are currently abroad, this measure ensures they can be arrested promptly upon returning to Bangladesh.”
The tragic death has brought to light allegations surrounding Ikra and Alvi’s 15-year marriage. Following her death, private chats belonging to Ikra surfaced on social media, triggering widespread public discussion and debate over the circumstances leading to her demise. Reports suggest that Alvi maintained an extramarital relationship with a fellow actor, which may have contributed to the emotional distress that preceded Ikra’s death.
Alvi and Ikra had married secretly on 9 November 2010. The couple had one son, Rizik. Ikra’s maternal uncle confirmed that her post-mortem examination was completed in the morning, after which her body was taken to her ancestral home in Dhitpur Union, Valuka, Mymensingh, and laid to rest in the family graveyard.
Family members, including Ikra’s mother, Rebeka Sultana, assert that her daughter’s death was driven by the trauma caused by her husband’s infidelity and alleged abusive behaviour. Close friends have also emphasised that Ikra was not the kind of person who would consider suicide under ordinary circumstances. Her friend, Samia Alam, stated, “She was not someone who would take her own life lightly. It is crucial to understand the extent of the suffering she endured in her marriage.”
The case has sparked significant media attention and public discourse in Bangladesh, highlighting issues of domestic abuse and mental health within the entertainment industry. Investigations continue as authorities work to ensure accountability.
