A judicial tribunal in Sunamganj has delivered a landmark verdict, sentencing a young man to life imprisonment for the aggravated rape and illicit filming of a college student. The ruling, handed down on Sunday by Judge Muhammad Habibullah of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, concludes a harrowing case of digital exploitation and predatory deception. Along with the custodial sentence, the court imposed a significant financial penalty to be paid directly to the survivor.
The origins of the case date back to September 2019, when the convict, identified as Mohibur Rahman, initiated contact with the victim, a resident of Chhatak Municipality and a college student. Rahman, the son of Gous Ali from Terapur village, meticulously constructed a fraudulent identity. He portrayed himself as a wealthy expatriate living in France, claiming to possess vast estates and significant assets abroad.
Over several months of telephonic correspondence, Rahman groomed the victim, eventually establishing a romantic involvement. He exploited her aspirations by promising marriage and a subsequent life together in Europe. The deception reached its peak when he informed the student that he had returned to the country specifically to meet her and formalise their union.
On 11 November 2019, the victim was lured to a residential hotel in Chhatak under the guise of a meeting arranged by Rahman and an accomplice. It was within these premises that the victim was subjected to repeated sexual assault. During the ordeal, the perpetrator used a mobile device to record explicit videos and take photographs of the victim without her consent.
Upon returning home, the student fell ill, and the full extent of the betrayal came to light. She discovered that Rahman had never resided in France and that his entire background was a fabrication. When she courageously terminated all communication, the convict attempted to blackmail her. Upon her refusal to meet him again, he disseminated the sensitive footage across various social media platforms, leading to a case being filed under the Pornography Control Act.
The Public Prosecutor, Shamsur Rahman, confirmed that the court found the evidence of both the physical assault and the digital crime to be irrefutable. Although the convict remains at large, the court has directed law enforcement to ensure his immediate apprehension to serve the sentence.
