A shocking act of domestic violence has gripped the village of Hariharpur in the Hakimpur Upazila of Dinajpur. A 32-year-old man, identified as Shahinur Islam, allegedly carried out a brutal physical assault on his second wife, Riva Moni, age 20, resulting in severe disfigurement and a severed nose. The attack was reportedly motivated by vengeance after the victim initiated divorce proceedings upon discovering her husband's secret prior marriage.
The roots of the tragedy trace back to March of the previous year, when Shahinur, the son of Khorshed Alam from Joypurhat, married Riva Moni. Crucially, Shahinur concealed the fact that he was already married and had two children from his first union. For several months, the couple resided at Riva’s paternal home in Hariharpur.
The deception remained hidden until three months ago, when Riva’s family unearthed the truth about Shahinur’s existing household. Outraged by the betrayal and the fraudulent nature of the marriage, Riva Moni issued a formal legal notice of divorce through the court last Wednesday.
The escalation of violence began on Friday evening when Shahinur arrived at the residence to confront Riva, leading to a heated altercation and death threats. The following morning, at approximately 11:00 AM, Shahinur returned to the house while Riva was alone.
Armed with a sharp blade, he launched a frenzied attack, inflicting multiple stab wounds across her body. In a particularly heinous act of cruelty, he used the weapon to sever her nose completely. Local residents, alerted by the commotion, rushed to the scene to find Riva in a critical state. They apprehended Shahinur, administered a mob beating, and subsequently handed him over to the local authorities.
The victim was initially rushed to the Hakimpur Upazila Health Complex. However, due to the severity of the mutilation and blood loss, she was later transferred to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital for advanced surgical intervention.
