Sunny Leone’s career recently took an unexpected turn with her performance in Anurag Kashyap’s film Kennedy, now available on an OTT platform. In a detailed interview marking the film’s release, Leone spoke about her journey, her experience working on the film, and the nuances of bringing her character to life.

A New Dimension in Kennedy

In Kennedy, Leone portrays the character Charlie, a role that reveals facets of her acting rarely seen before. Released on OTT three years after its initial production, the film has already sparked discussions across both domestic and international film communities. Leone described working with director Anurag Kashyap as a professional privilege. She said:

“Everyone’s experience may vary, but he is never unnecessarily harsh on set. His expectation is simple—you come prepared and know your craft. Yet, he gives time, which not everyone does.”

For Leone, being offered the role was nothing short of astonishing. While she has been a familiar face in mainstream entertainment, collaborating with a filmmaker of Kashyap’s stature felt like a dream.

“The industry has its politics. Changes can happen at the last minute. Until the first shoot was complete, I felt anything could happen. But after the first shot, I realised—Charlie truly belongs here.”

Festival Screenings and International Recognition

Kennedy premiered in the Midnight Screening section at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. It subsequently featured at prominent festivals including the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, the Sydney Film Festival, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, the London Indian Film Festival, and the Busan International Film Festival. The film has consistently received critical acclaim and audience appreciation.

Charlie’s Signature Smile

Leone invested weeks perfecting a defining trait of Charlie—her enigmatic smile that appears at unexpected moments. She practised in lifts, on sets, and even at airports.

“People around me probably thought I had lost it, but it was my way of truly inhabiting the character.”

OTT Release and Audience Response

After a lengthy festival run, Kennedy premiered on OTT on 20 February 2026. Although its release in India was delayed, audiences have embraced the film enthusiastically. Leone noted:

“Every film has its own time. When the moment is right, it finds its audience. The viewers in Mumbai have responded beautifully, and now the platform ensures the film reaches them properly.”

Appreciation and Future Reflections

Leone has received unexpected praise from colleagues for her portrayal of Charlie, with both audiences and critics responding positively. Reflecting on her journey, she said:

“I would tell my younger self—fasten your seatbelt. The road won’t be easy. Nothing in life comes without struggle. I had to fight and hold on. Every closed door led me to try another, and it was those efforts that brought me here.”

Sunny Leone’s experience is a testament to how a single phone call can entirely transform one’s life, opening doors to opportunities that redefine a career.
