Pakistan Authorities Seal Historic Ramleela Temple Amid Commercial Construction Outrage

Local authorities in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province have stepped in to halt the demolition of the historic Ramleela Temple, sealing off the heritage site located in Rahim Bazar, Dera Ismail Khan.

The move came on Saturday, 17 October, following a fierce public outcry after local developers initiated efforts to tear down the traditional structure to make way for a modern commercial complex. Recognizing the rising tension and potential damage to a protected site, Assistant Commissioner Hamid Siddique intervened directly, placing official seals on the building and issuing an immediate stay order on all construction activities.

News of the attempted demolition sparked swift condemnation across the region, drawing together civil society activists and members of the local Hindu community for an emergency consultation. Convened at the office of Civil Society President Sohael Ahmad Azmi, the meeting included prominent community figures, such as former provincial assembly member Kishore Kumar and social activist Muhammad Nauman. Attendees unanimously denounced the commercial venture and urged elected parliamentary representatives to raise the violation on the floor of the National Assembly.

During the discussions, community representatives highlighted that the Ramleela Temple is among roughly 400 properties in Dera Ismail Khan officially designated as cultural heritage sites by the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB). Under existing regulations, structures under the ETPB’s jurisdiction are protected to preserve the historical and architectural legacy of religious minorities. Participants voiced deep concern over how commercial building permits were granted for a protected monument, openly questioning the legal authority and motives of the officials involved in approving the project.

The assembly resolved to mount a firm resistance against any future efforts to dismantle the complex. To ensure long-term protection, civic leaders agreed to submit formal complaints and demand a thorough official inquiry from key regulatory bodies, including the district administration, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and the Department of Archaeology.

The incident underscores the ongoing struggles surrounding the preservation of non-Muslim heritage sites across Pakistan. Despite legal safeguards intended to protect historic places of worship, urban development pressures and administrative oversights frequently put these irreplaceable landmarks at risk. For now, the sealing of the Ramleela Temple offers a temporary reprieve, though community leaders remain vigilant in their push for a permanent conservation mandate.
