Police officers have apprehended Kazi Al Tariq, president of the Panchagarh municipal unit of the Bangladesh Awami League and former vice-chairman of Panchagarh Sadar Upazila Council. Detectives intercepted a long-distance coach in the Birampur area of Dinajpur district overnight on Friday to execute the arrest warrant.
The 44-year-old politician, a resident of the Ramerdanga neighbourhood in Panchagarh municipality, was attempting to flee to Dhaka when law enforcement intervened. Acting on precise intelligence gathered through information technology tracking, the Panchagarh District Detective Branch (DB) tracked his movements as he boarded a Dhaka-bound bus named ‘Ahad’ from Pirganj in Thakurgaon district.
Co-ordinating with a highway patrol team from Birampur Police Station, detective personnel set up a checkpoint near the Birampur Bus Terminal. Officers signalled the moving vehicle to pull over around 2:00 am on Friday. A thorough search of the bus led to the identification and detention of Tariq, who had been evading law enforcement authorities.
Following his capture, detectives transferred Tariq to Panchagarh Sadar Police Station for preliminary questioning. He faces serious criminal allegations stemming from recent unrest across the district. Official police press releases confirm that multiple charges have been recorded against him, including specific allegations of orchestrating violent assaults on participants during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and offences under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
In a formal press statement issued on Friday afternoon, Panchagarh District Police outlined the details of the joint operation. Later that afternoon, officers produced Tariq before the Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Panchagarh. Senior Judicial Magistrate A. S. M. Sajjad Hossain denied bail and ordered the suspect to be remanded in judicial custody pending further legal proceedings.
Mokhlesur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Panchagarh Sadar Police Station, verified the arrest and court order sending the politician to prison. Police officials noted that investigative teams are continuing their work to process the outstanding cases lodged against Tariq and determine whether additional accomplices assisted him whilst he was absconding.
