Panchagarh Awami League Leader Ujjal Sent to Jail

Police have arrested SM Humayun Kabir Ujjal, general secretary of the Panchagarh municipal Awami League, in connection with several cases filed with Panchagarh Sadar Police Station.

Ujjal was arrested from his home in the Dhakaiyapatti area of Panchagarh town on Wednesday (16 September), police said. He was later produced before a court in the afternoon, where a judge ordered that he be sent to jail.

According to police, several cases are pending against Ujjal at Panchagarh Sadar Police Station. The cases include allegations relating to the disappearance and alleged killing of Al Amin during the anti-discrimination student movement, an alleged attack on students, and a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Police said legal proceedings in the cases had already been under way. His arrest on Wednesday was carried out as part of those proceedings. Following his arrest at his residence, police completed the necessary legal formalities before producing him before the court.

After the hearing, the court ordered that Ujjal be sent to jail. He was subsequently taken into custody in accordance with the court’s directive.

Panchagarh Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mokhlesur Rahman confirmed the arrest. He said Ujjal had several cases against him at the police station and that, after completing the necessary legal procedures, police produced him before the court, which ordered his detention in jail.

Ujjal had been serving as general secretary of the Panchagarh municipal Awami League. His arrest follows allegations in several cases involving incidents linked to the period of the anti-discrimination student movement.

The case involving Al Amin concerns allegations that he went missing during the movement and was subsequently killed after being abducted. Separate allegations have also been brought over attacks on students. Police have not indicated that the allegations have been established as facts through a final judicial ruling.

The arrest and subsequent detention are part of the ongoing legal process. The allegations against Ujjal will be examined through the judicial proceedings, where evidence and other relevant materials will be considered.

Police have said the arrest was made on the basis of the cases registered against him. As the proceedings continue, the court will determine the legal status of the allegations. Ujjal is currently in jail following the court’s order.
