Police Apprehend Eight Following Flash Rally in Chittagong

Published: 21 Feb 2026, 07:07 am

In a swift security operation, law enforcement officials in Chittagong have apprehended eight individuals associated with Chhatra League and Juba League. The arrests occurred in the early hours of Friday morning following an unannounced "flash rally" (locally known as a jhotika michil) near the Rifle Club in the city’s Kotwali precinct.

The Midnight Intervention

According to local police sources, the group attempted to hold a sudden demonstration under the banner of the Chittagong Metropolitan Juba League. The participants reportedly emerged unexpectedly, brandishing banners and chanting slogans. However, vigilant patrols from the Kotwali Police Station intervened promptly, intercepting the group before the gathering could expand or disrupt public order.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali, Md. Aftab Uddin, confirmed that the eight individuals were caught at the scene with organisational banners in their possession. Following their arrest, they were formally processed under relevant sections of the law and subsequently remanded to judicial custody by the court.

Profiles of the Detained Individuals

The apprehended group consists primarily of young men hailing from various sub-districts (Upazilas) within the Chittagong Division. Their details are summarised in the table below:

Legal Proceedings and Regional Context

The OC noted that a formal case has been registered against the detainees at the local station. The authorities have categorised the attempted rally as an unauthorised assembly that posed a potential risk to the city's stability. The speed of the police response reflects the heightened security posture currently maintained by the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) to monitor and manage political gatherings in high-traffic urban zones.

The suspects were escorted to prison on Friday afternoon following their court appearance. Investigations are ongoing to determine if additional members of Chhatra League or Juba League were involved in orchestrating the event, as the administration remains vigilant regarding unannounced political activities.
