Law enforcement agencies in Gazipur have detained six individuals, including five active members of Bangladesh Chhatra League, following separate operations conducted across the Tongi region. The arrests unfolded on Sunday, with five suspects apprehended under the jurisdiction of Tongi West Police Station and a sixth individual taken into custody by Tongi North-East’s Tongi East Police Station.
The sweep highlights ongoing security measures in the industrial hub, where local authorities have maintained a heightened state of vigilance against potential civil disturbances and unlawful assemblies. Security officials have repeatedly emphasised that individuals linked to subversive acts or planned disruptions will face strict legal consequences without exception.
Among those detained by Tongi West Police Station are local residents and students with documented affiliations to the ruling party’s student wing. Investigators identified Mohammad Faruk, 28, a resident of the Mandal Market area in Borodaora, alongside Alamin, 31, who hails from Jhenaigati in Sherpur. Three other suspects detained in the same sweep include Shakibul Hossain Shakib, 19, who serves as the vice-president of Ward 51 Chhatra League; Shihab, 27, originating from Dohar in Dhaka; and Minhaj Masum, 28, an executive committee member of Gazipur Metropolitan Chhatra League.
Concurrently, a separate operation by the Tongi East Police Station led to the detention of Mohammad Matin, 45, a resident of the Morkun Masterpara neighbourhood. While police have not yet disclosed the specific charges or active warrants tied to Matin’s arrest, local investigators confirmed he is being questioned regarding separate legal complaints.
Tongi East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Maksudul Alam addressed the media following the operations, confirming that formal criminal cases have been registered against all six suspects under prevailing penal statutes. “Appropriate legal action has been initiated against those arrested, and paperwork is currently being finalised to transfer them to the judicial courts,” Alam stated, reiterating that law enforcement will maintain zero tolerance for any activities threatening public order in the area.
