Police in Nawabganj upazila, Dinajpur, have arrested three active members of Chhatra League following coordinated raids across several areas of the upazila. The operations took place at around 8:00 pm on Tuesday, 3 November, as part of an ongoing investigation into an unlawful assembly and planned subversive activities.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Shahi Imran, 23, residing in Shrikrishnapur village under Binodnagar Union, along with Nure Alam Siddique, 20, and Mahadi Hasan, 20, both residents of Jagannathpur village in the same union. Local authorities confirmed that all three suspects have been long-term active members of Chhatra League within their respective localities.
According to the official First Information Report (FIR), the incident stems from an event on the night of 9 August. At approximately 9:00 pm, a group of individuals assembled on the Pathanganj-Dangsherhat paved road near Paharpur village in Binodnagar Union. The report states that the gathering occurred under the instructions of Shibli Sadik, a former Member of Parliament for the area.
Investigators detailed that the assembled group was preparing to organise a torch procession demanding the withdrawal of a death penalty verdict concerning former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Reports indicate that the participants were equipped with various lethal domestic weapons, including axes, iron rods, samurai swords, hockey sticks, and bamboo staves.
Acting on secret information, police dispatched a team to the Paharpur area at around 10:15 pm that night. Upon sensing the arrival of law enforcement personnel, those gathering for the procession fled the scene, abandoning their preparations. Police subsequently filed a formal case under the Anti-Terrorism Act to address the incident.
The Officer-in-Charge of Nawabganj Police Station, Abdul Kuddus, confirmed the arrests, stating that the three suspects were taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation into the anti-terrorism case. He added that official procedures were underway to present the detainees before the Dinajpur Court, while law enforcement operations continue to locate and apprehend other individuals connected to the case.
