Police Constable Accused of Sexually Assaulting Nurse and Defrauding £5,000

A police constable stationed at Rajarbagh Police Lines in Dhaka has been accused of sexually assaulting a private hospital nurse under the pretext of marriage and swindling 800,000 Bangladeshi Taka (approximately £5,000) from her family. The victim has lodged a formal written complaint with the Gajaria Police Station in Munshiganj seeking justice and legal action.

The accused officer has been identified as 28-year-old Ruman Hossain, son of Akhtar Ali from Douatala village in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila. According to the complaint filed by the victim, Hossain is currently posted at the Rajarbagh Police Lines.

According to the written complaint, the nurse first connected with Hossain on Facebook in 2021. Their acquaintance developed into a romantic relationship over time. Although communication lapsed for a period, Hossain re-established contact in late 2025 and formally proposed marriage to the nurse. Citing pressing family debts, he began requesting financial assistance from her.

Believing his intentions were genuine, the victim and her family transferred funds to Hossain on 34 separate occasions via cash, bank transfers, and mobile financial services, amounting to a total of 800,000 Taka.

Under the repeated promise of marriage, Hossain initiated physical intimacy with the victim on multiple occasions. In March 2026, he took her to Sylhet under the guise of arranging their wedding, where he again coerced her into physical relations. However, rather than fulfilling his marriage pledge, he subsequently dropped her off at her residence.

When the victim and her family pressed Hossain to repay the funds and finalize a wedding date, he continually offered excuses to delay proceedings. Eventually, both sides agreed upon 5 June 2026 as the official wedding date. On the designated day, neither Hossain nor any member of his family appeared. Shortly afterwards, Hossain switched off his primary mobile phone number and severed all communication with the victim.

Distraught by his sudden disappearance, the victim’s father travelled to Hossain’s ancestral home in Jamalpur to investigate. There, the family discovered that Hossain was already married and had a seven-year-old daughter. The victim’s father stated that Hossain had fabricated his bachelor status solely to exploit his daughter emotionally and extract money under false pretences, demanding strict legal action against the officer.

Repeated attempts to contact Constable Ruman Hossain via telephone for comment were unsuccessful as his mobile device remained switched off.

Inspector (Investigation) Md Sabbir Hossain of Gajaria Police Station confirmed receipt of the written complaint. He stated that law enforcement authorities have initiated an investigation into the allegations and assured that appropriate legal measures will be taken pending the outcome of the inquiry.
